Great Events Coming up Downtown! Arts Council Grant Awarded for Downtown Art! With less than six months to Christmas, I say we start looking ahead to cooler days and maybe even a bit of snow. Maybe that is too far ahead, but it's the perfect time to start thinking about Christmas in July, which happens to be the theme for this month's Fourth Friday event! Here are some more events to look forward to: • Fayetteville after Five hosts a Tribute Night for the final appearance of the summer! Jam to the likes of U2, AC/DC and Motley Crue on Friday, July 19 with bands In the Name of Love, High Voltage and Mostley Crue in Festival Park. Gates open at 5 p.m. with opening acts starting around 5:30-6 p.m. The concert is free, but you might want to bring some pocket money for beverages and snacks! • Celebrating Christmas in July at this month's Fourth Friday on July 28! A Downtown Alliance sponsored shopping extravaganza complete with music, entertainment and a few thousand friends (new and old). Join the festivities starting at 6 p.m. – have dinner in one of our air-conditioned (!) restaurants or feel the breeze on the patios then check your list then check it twice while you get a head start shopping for the holidays. Downtown Fayetteville will be playing host next year to an array of public art pieces with help from a grant from the Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County. Raleigh has had wolves, Charleston has had turtles, New Bern with beats, Greenville with pirates, Pinehurst most recently with golf balls and so forth. This is a fun project that has had much success in other communities and we are working towards bringing this to our downtown in order to for our visitors to explore their community, to find our hidden gems and discover what our downtown truly has to offer - all while marketing the wealth of art creativity and expertise in our region. This project will include self-directed tours, contests, scavenger hunts to further encourage tours, a fall auction and more. Our program goals consist of increasing tourism to Fayetteville and Cumberland county particularly to Downtown Fayetteville, to increase visibility of our museums and parks as well as side streets and more, to showcase our local artists in a highly visible and creative way, to unify our community with an icon and tell the story about why that icon was chosen and to raise money for identified cause. Stay tuned for ways that you and your business can get involved! More details coming soon! 5K, 10K and 1 mile Fun Walk on Saturday, Aug. 3 with a route beginning at Festival Park. This is also the largest race in Fayetteville and the first 750 participants get a free t-shirt. Strollers, kids, wagons and dogs on leashes are allowed. Online registration is available and pre-registration is strongly encouraged because this race does sell out! And don't forget, you can always find out the latest and greatest information including upcoming events, directory listings and more in Downtown Fayetteville on the Downtown Fayetteville website, www.visitdowntownfayetteville.com! • Ready to run in the "Hottest Race in the South?"
