ALPHA TAU OMEGA • GAMMA GAMMA CHAPTER ROSE-HULMAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY • FALL 2021 F or the brothers who were able to make it back for Homecoming, it was quite a weekend! Approximately 200 Gamma Gamma alumni, plus many spouses, family members, and friends, stopped by on Friday and Saturday to see the partially renovated house. To see so many brothers back after not having Homecoming last year was truly special! Brothers and guests saw firsthand how excited the actives are with the already completed renovations and learned how impactful the renovations and investment were on recruitment. They also got a real feel of how our goal of once again having the best house in the best location on campus, for one of the most decorated ΑΤΩ chapters in the nation, is coming to fruition. Ron Reeves '58 would be very pleased and proud to see what's being done by so many to build on his legacy! The decision to start and complete construction this past summer/fall versus over two summers was clearly a good one! We saved significant money by avoiding remobilizing construction forces, gave actives a much nicer facility to use and show off to prospective new members a year earlier, and created a greater enthusiasm for the campaign. Every alumnus we spoke with after touring the house was very pleased with what they saw, and several brothers who had not yet donated indicated they would be opening their wallets, while others said they were inclined to increase their donations. By Homecoming weekend in October, the house's living quarter renovations were completed (including ductless air conditioning, new bunk beds, closets, flooring, windows, and new study areas with high speed internet capability). Infrastructure and other upgrades included the electrical and plumbing systems, a refurbished kitchen, water softening and heating facilities, a laundry facility, energy-efficient windows in common areas, hallway flooring, and fresh paint throughout. After Thanksgiving break, construction was completed on the new front entrance, including an elevator, an ADA-compliant restroom, and the downstairs pledge/study room. Landscaping is scheduled for the spring. And construction has remained within budget, which is quite an achievement given recent inflationary impacts to construction labor and materials. The total cost of the entire project will be $3.9 million (see breakdown on page 3), which includes a $350,000 capital endowment to fund future large maintenance and capital needs more than the annual operating budget. Of that, the active chapter will be providing around $900,000, or 23% of the total, which is some serious skin in the game considering the ratio of alumni to actives and the financial well-being of most alumni relative to Rose students paying around $65,000 annually to attend school. So, where does the campaign stand? As of publication, we have 272 brothers who have contributed or pledged $2.52 million toward our $3 million alumni donation goal. In addition to the 15-member campaign board, who solicited most of the early donors, we now have over 60 alumni talking with hundreds of brothers who have yet to donate. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to give back to an institution that helped shape and change the trajectory of so many lives, created lifelong friendships, and, frankly, made a very tough four years of engineering school fun! Please consider how you can provide that same opportunity for future generations of Gamma Gamma brothers. Every donation gets us closer to building the kind of legacy worthy of a brother like Ron Reeves!
