Join Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks and Recreation at J. Bayard Clark Park & Nature Center and learn which animals can be found in our area this time of year and how they survive the wintertime. JANUARY 7 THE 2021 DETOUR SLAM THE SWEET PALETTE The 2021 Detour Slam at The Sweet Palette will help bring in new poets to compete at the Southern Fried Poetry Festival and represent Fayetteville. There is a $10 fee for poets to compete. Although audience members may watch for free, donations are strongly encouraged. All proceeds will go towards the Detour Slam Team. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the slam will start at 8:30 p.m. at 101 Person St. JANUARY 8 COMMUNITY CLEANUP SUSTAINABLE SANDHILLS Spend part of your weekend pick- ing up litter to help keep Cumberland County beautiful. Gloves, vests, trash pickers and bags will be provided for volunteers. Please bring a water bottle. The volunteers will meet up at the Food Lion on 5555 Waldos Beach Road. Volunteer hours with Sustain- able Sandhills can be counted toward community service requirements. This event will run from 9 to 11 a.m. For additional information, contact Anna Chott at anna@sustainablesandhills.org JANUARY 15 KANSAS PRESENTS POINT OF KNOW RETURN TOUR CROWN THEATER Kansas is bringing their Point of Know Return 40th Anniversary tour to the Crown. With a legendary career span- ning nearly five decades, Kansas has firmly established itself as one of America's iconic classic rock bands. This "garage band" from Topeka released their debut album in 1974, and have sold more than 30 million albums worldwide. Kansas is known by their hit singles such as "Carry On Wayward Son" and "Dust in the Wind." Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at CapeFearTix.com, the Crown Complex Box Office, and Fort Bragg Leisure Travel Services. BALD IS BEAUTIFUL: BALD EAGLES IN NORTH CAROLINA J. BAYARD CLARK PARK Learn about Bald Eagles returning to North Carolina after being endangered for decades. Find out where they can be seen and learn more about the history of our national bird. The event will take place at the J. Bayard Clark Park & Nature Center. Clark Park Nature Center offers nature and recreation programming for educators, groups, individuals and families. JANUARY 21 TOO HOT TO HANDEL FAYETTEVILLE SYMPHONY The Fayetteville Symphony Or- chestra will be performing some of George Frideric Handel's most well-known pieces such as "Overture to Solomon," "Let the Bright Seraphim," and "Ombra Mai Fu." The concert will conclude with a piece referred to by Mozart as a "specta- cle of English pride and joy", Handel's Music for the Royal Fireworks. Baroque and Handel fans will not want to miss this exciting concert at St. John's Episcopal Church at 7:30 p.m. The concert runs for one hour and fifteen minutes. Ticket prices range from $8 to $25. JANUARY 21 JANUARY 14 MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. BREAKFAST SPRING LAKES REC CENTER The Town of Spring Lake will be honor- ing the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., by hosting a public breakfast in his honor. The event will take place in the gymnasium of the Recreation Center, located at 245 Ruth St from 9 to 11 a.m. More information can be found by calling 910-436-0011. AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER CROWN COLISEUM The "I'm UNSTOPPABLE" Runway Extravaganza plans on being epic and fashionable. This fashion show will feature the latest from top formal wear designers like JOVANI, Sherri Hill, Ashley Lauren, Jonathan Kayne, Tarik Ediz, Ellie Wilde and more. JANUARY 22 JANUARY 14 - FEBRUARY 5 ROMEO AND JULI-LIT SWEET TEA SHAKESPEARE Sweet Tea Shakespeare is performing their version of Romeo and Juliet - a Shakespeare classic about love, war and death. Lit performances combine Shake- speare and drinks. These performances are for adults, 18 and up, only. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.The event will be held in the Arts Council Building located at 501 Hay St. Ticket prices range from $10 to $25.
