Daddy came home from Trade Day on a Saturday morning with an unsuspecting surprise for his four girls. The red pogo-stick he bought would be shared between the four of us just like the 24-inch Western Flyer bicycle discovered under our Christmas tree one year. If I had ever seen a pogo- stick I do not recall so this was a new toy for us. Of course a pogo-stick was nothing like today's toys to jump or ride. It didn't have wheels, instead had strong springs inside that when a person stepped upon the two small feet platforms and grabbed the handle bars, the jumping began. We learned quickly to ride the pogo-stick all over the yard, up and down hills and even on the low-traffi c dirt road where we lived. Back then there were seven houses along the unpaved road so we were safe and allowed to play in the road. Imagine with me how it was to ride a pogo-stick on a dirt road or across an uneven yard. Unlike the hula-hoop that offered many opportunities for tricks, we never learned any pogo-stick tricks. It was to jump on as long as possible. The greatest number of jumps determined a winner. Although we didn't know it at the time, the pogo- stick ride was quite intense. Would you believe we were jumping the hound out of a toy that also provided low- impact cardio exercise that also worked muscles? Who would have thought an hour's worth of jumping would burn 600 calories — that is if the jumps were 6 to 8 inches high? Higher jumps meant greater calories burned. Who would have thought? So clearly, the pogo-stick was nothing like today's favorite hoverboards, ATVs, trampolines for jumping, scooters, high power bicycles or even go-karts, 60 years ago the long, red slender toy with hand and feet rests was a surprise for a generation of country girls. By the way, my sisters and I, cousins and neighbors eventually wore the springs out and the pogo-stick and the jumping was over. But nothing could keep us from still jumping. We used all the power in our arms and legs, jumping across the yard and up the road — totally spring free. Although the pogo-stick had to go, the memories of that Saturday morning trade- day surprise still lingers. And it wasn't even Christmas. Contact Jean at: gordonjean211@gmail.com DID YOU EVER JUMP WITH A SPRING-LESS POGO-STICK? By: Jean Gordon Retailers and shippers traditionally hire seasonal workers to fulfi ll the demands of holiday shoppers whether they are online or in person. These jobs are a great way to make extra money, sometimes with the possibility of turning into a long-term employment opportunity, however, they are not all what they seem. When looking for something part- time or to fi ll the gap until a better opportunity comes along, Better Business Bureau has some suggestions to make the seasonal job hunt successful. Being proactive in fi nding the right opportunity is key, but so is watching out for a job that just seems too good to be true. • Employers will never ask for payment upfront for a job. Beware of businesses that ask applicants to pay for job supplies, application or training fees. These expenses are the responsibility of the employer ... and a big red fl ag that something is wrong. • Be wary of job offers that don't require an interview. Even during the peak hiring season, reputable companies prefer to talk to top job candidates before hiring them. If a job offer is presented without an interview (on the phone or in person) or is offered only via the internet, question the company's hiring practices and do a little more digging. • Be wary of big money for small jobs. If an employer is promising outrageously good wages for what seems like simple tasks such as reshipping packages, stuffi ng envelopes or answering phones, this is a red fl ag. These too- good-to-be-true offers are an attempt to steal your personal information from a fake job application, and can take a long time to recover from. • Never work for a company before they hire you. A legitimate company will not ask potential applicants to complete complex projects before making an offi cial offer. Before beginning any work, request an offer letter or confi rmation in writing of what the job entails, including an offi cial start date and compensation details.
