W hen I went back to the Minnesota Alpha Chapter house on October 7, I was flooded with memories from my time living in the chapter house. I also noticed quite a few changes since I was a student at the University of Minnesota. The chapter has 133 members and only sophomores live in the house. The chapter owns another house behind the chapter house referred to as "the annex" to sleep additional members. There are 22 members who live in the main house and 13 in the annex. The chapter is so large that their meetings are held in a classroom on campus, typically starting with a potluck. There are 14 sororities at U of M compared to the 23 when I was on campus in the 1950s. I was a Panhellenic Rushing Chairman as a junior and found an old rushing book in my collection of college papers. When I looked up the list, I found that nine sororities are no longer on campus and three are new. We were limited to 58 members total — actives and pledges. Rushing is now called Formal Recruitment and the term pledge has been replaced by New Member. The basic structure of the inside of the house looks pretty much like it did when I was there 65 years ago. The remodel is to completely redo the downstairs, making it an open area with a more efficient kitchen. They are also redoing the bathrooms and changing the third floor into an eight-person suite with a larger bathroom. The President lives in a room on the first floor with her own bathroom. The "Housemother" is now the House Director, who has a suite on the main floor near the Chapter President's room. Members no longer wait on tables. It is done by young men. When I lived in the house, I had such a great time working in the kitchen to help pay my room and board. Walking the halls and looking into some of the rooms reminded me of many sorority sisters who lived in the house when I did. Their spirit was with me.
