Chelios, Niedermayer top 2013 Hockey Hall class TORONTO (AP) — Defensemen Scott Niedermayer and Chris Chelios, along with forward Brendan Shanahan have been picked for the Hockey Hall of Fame. They'll be joined in the class of 2013 by Geraldine Heaney, the third woman to be enshrined in the hall, and coach Fred Shero, who led the Philadelphia Flyers to the Stanley Cup in 1974 and '75. He was selected posthumously in the builder category. Chelios and Niedermayer earned hockey's biggest individual honor in their first year of eligibility. The official induction ceremony is scheduled for November. Niedermayer won four Stanley Cups in 17 full NHL seasons to go along with a Norris Trophy and Conn Smythe Trophy. Chelios played 23 full seasons and parts of three more, taking part in his final NHL game at age 48. Among the game's best U.S.-born players, Chelios won the Norris Trophy as the league's top defenseman three times. AP photo Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Dan Straily (67) delivers during the first inning of a baseball game against the Pittsburgh Pirates in Pittsburgh on Tuesday. A's keep rolling with win PITTSBURGH (AP) — Dan Straily pitched two-hit ball into the seventh inning, Brandon Moss hit a tworun homer and the Oakland Athletics beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 on Tuesday night. Straily (6-2) struck out seven and walked three in 6 1-3 innings for his second straight strong outing. Grant Balfour worked the ninth to remain perfect in 24 save chances this season. The A's have won 10 of 13. Gerrit Cole (4-2) lost his second consecutive decision despite working seven innings for the first time in his four-week major league career. Cole allowed five hits, struck out four and walked two. After the start was delayed 1 hour, 42 minutes, Pedro Alvarez hit his 23rd home run but Pittsburgh matched a season high with its fourth straight loss. Straily has struggled starting on four days' rest during his brief major league career, coming in 0-3 with a 7.16 ERA when not given at least five days between starts. Yet the rookie had no issues dealing with Pittsburgh's suddenly punchless offense. The Pirates have scored just six runs during a 2-6 slump that has dropped them behind first-place St. Louis in the heated NL Central race. Alvarez provided Pittsburgh's lone run with a 448-foot drive to the bushes in center leading off the second. The home run made him just the third player in team history to reach 23 homers before the All-Star break, joining Ralph Kiner and Willie Stargell. In a way, Alvarez is having the type of season the franchise once envisioned for Moss. The first baseman spent parts of three seasons with the Pirates between 2008-10, with Pittsburgh hoping his raw left-handed power would help him pound balls off — or over — the Clemente Wall in right field. It never really happened. Moss hit all of 13 homers in 195 games for the Pirates before eventually making his way to Oakland, where he's become a key cog in one of baseball's biggest surprises. Moss provided a glimpse of what could have been in Pittsburgh in the fourth when Cole wobbled for the briefest of moments. The right-hander had retired nine straight when John Jaso stepped to the plate. The Pirates swung the defense to the right only to have Jaso smack a double down the left-field line. The ball would have been playable if Alvarez was in his normal position at third base. Instead, he was 40 feet away as the ball rolled into the outfield. One pitch later, Moss gave the A's the lead, sending a changeup into the second row in right to give Straily all the backing he needed. The Pirates didn't get a runner to third base over the final six innings. Their best chance to tie the game came in the seventh when Alvarez led off with a walk and moved to second on Russell Martin's sacrifice bunt. Oakland reliever Sean Doolittle replaced Straily and struck out pinchhitter Gaby Sanchez before getting Jordy Mercer to pop up to first. Jose Tabata led off the ninth with a single off Balfour, but Andrew McCutchen and Alvarez struck out before Martin grounded out meekly See A'S, page 2B By ANTONIO GONZALEZ AP Sports Writer The Sacramento Kings found some much-needed depth at small forward by giving the Milwaukee Bucks some draft compensation and salary cap relief. The Bucks traded forward Luc Mbah a Moute to the Kings in exchange for a 2016 second-round draft pick, a person familiar with the deal said Tuesday. The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because teams can't confirm moves until the new league year begins Wednesday, also said Milwaukee has the right to swap 2018 second-round picks. ''Just landed in Cameroon and got told I've been traded to Sacramento!!'' Mbah a Moute wrote on his Twitter page. The 6-foot-8, 230-pound forward has emerged as a standout defender since he was drafted 37th overall out of UCLA by the Bucks in 2008. He has averaged 6.9 points and 5.3 rebounds in 25.1 minutes per game in his career. CBS Sports first reported the trade. Mbah a Moute has two years left on a four-year deal worth about $19 million that he signed as a restricted free agent before the lockout-shorted 2011-12 season. That move came when Milwaukee matched the offer sheet from Denver, where new Kings general manager Pete D'Alessandro worked in the front office at the time. In Sacramento, Mbah a Moute will be expected to fill the void at small forward. The Kings made an attempt to sign Andre Iguodala at that spot before he landed a four-year, $48 million deal with the Golden State Warriors last week. Mbah a Moute will compete with incumbent starter John Salmons for playing time. The Kings will likely still explore other options in free agency. Also Tuesday, new Kings coach Mike Malone was busy filling out his staff. Dee Brown, a 12-year NBA veteran and 1991 slam dunk champion, was hired as assistant coach and director of player development. And Micah Nori, who spent the last four years as an assistant with the Toronto Raptors, also was named an assistant. The two join lead assistant coach Chris Jent and Brendan Malone on Sacramento's bench. In addition, the Kings hired Bill Pope as an advance scout. Pope spent the past eight years as an assistant coach and scout for the Detroit Pistons. 49ERS High pick gets 4-year deal SANTA CLARA (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers have signed first-round pick Eric Reid to a four-year contract. With Tuesday's announcement, San Francisco has all 11 of its draft picks signed. The former LSU safety had actually tweeted a photo from Instagram of him signing a contract last week. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The 49ers drafted Reid 18th overall in April. In 39 games over three seasons with LSU, the 6foot-1, 213-pound Reid finished with 199 tackles, six interceptions, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, 11 pass breakups and 4 1/2 tackles for loss. Last season, Reid started all 13 games and tallied 91 tackles, two interceptions, one fumble recovery and seven pass breakups. The 22-year-old is a native of Baton Rouge, La.
