But, are companies providing an environment that attracts top talent and allows employees to be innovative? A recent study by one of the largest privately held staffing companies confirms a majority of employers are investing in employee development. According to a hiring trends survey of 323 employers in the U.S. and Canada, Express Employment Professionals found that more than half -- 58 percent -- of companies have an employee development program in place. And, 76 percent said they believe their company effectively identifies which employees need to improve their competencies and skills. However, according to a 2012/2013 Global Talent Management Rewards Study by Towers Watson, an HR consulting company, 72 percent of companies claim to have difficulties attracting critical-skill employees. "Without a focus on employee development, companies can have a hard time recruiting and retaining top talent. Organizations can easily lose their most productive and innovative team members to competitors," said Lisa Hansen, owner of the Red Bluff Express office. "If employees aren't growing, they're looking for other employment opportunities that will support their desire for improvement." The good news for employees is 96 percent of companies responding to the Express survey who indicated they focus on employee development offer on-the-job training, leadership coaching and mentoring. Other training programs they offer include company workshops, professional conferences, apprenticeships, cross training, formal classroom training and e-learning. According to the American School of Training and Development (ASTD), 75 percent of executives say mentoring was a key factor to their career success. Alarmingly, ASTD predicts that 35 percent of employees who aren't mentored search for new jobs within a year. "Employee engagement is vital to the success and future of your company," Hansen said. "And, there is no better way to establish loyalty than by developing your employees into top talent." Express is on a mission to put a million people to work annually, and worldwide, put more than 367,000 people to work in 2012 with more than 600 offices in the U.S., Canada and South Africa. Express provides expertise in evaluation hire, temporary staffing, professional search and human resources and works across a wide variety of industries. Covering essential expenses in retirement Today's retirees face unique challenges — including prolonged periods of market uncertainty and longer average lifespans — which make thoughtfully planning for retirement more critical than ever. For most, feeling more confident about retirement comes down to the ability to pay for essential expenses — the predictable and recurring costs of life's necessities. Some of the most common essential expenses include food, home maintenance costs, mortgage or rent payments, taxes and insurance premiums. How can you cover these expenses? Since markets will always fluctuate, having a concrete financial strategy that includes guaranteed or stable income sources can help you cover your essential expenses in all market environments. In fact, it's a good idea to aim to cover 100 percent of your essential expenses with these sources of income during retirement. If you're nearing retirement, you may already have one or more sources of guaranteed or stable income in place, most notably Social Security. You may also have a defined benefit plan through your employer. Yet, no matter how strong these two sources of income may be, they might not be sufficient to cover your essential expenses in retirement. This means that you will likely have to rely on your savings to pay some of your basic living costs. There are several financial solutions that offer guaranteed or stable income and can help you cover the gap between what you have in place and what you'll need, for example: • Annuities — Annuities can generate a reliable stream of income throughout retirement. Annuity contract guarantees are backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company. They can provide a stable income for a desired period of time, or for life. Some annuity contracts may also provide principle protection. The unique features of annuities offer opportunities for tax deferred future Enter to Win a Free TV! 3 Ways To Win!
