SIGMA PHI EPSILON p. 3 T he undergraduate brothers of Alabama Beta enjoyed their spring 2021 semester at 304 University. Despite various COVID-19 policies in place, the Chapter excelled academically, socially, and philanthropically. To kick-start the semester, Alabama Beta had the opportunity to celebrate the National Championship victory over Ohio State in January. It was a thrilling experience watching the team dominate SEC and the nation. Two members who are on the football team, Bret Bolin '22 and Bobby Reis '22, celebrated the triumph in Atlanta. A big congratulations to them and the Alabama football team! Academically, Alabama Beta finished third among the 34 IFC chapters in GPA rankings, with over 76% of brothers achieving a 3.0 or higher! The pandemic presented many new challenges, but the brothers were able to adapt and excel accordingly. The photo in the bottom right shows some internships and jobs that brothers landed this past summer and directly shows their performance and dedication to success in the classroom. Additionally, the Chapter had two brothers chosen for the 108th class of Jason's Senior Men's Honorary based on their outstanding academic performance, leadership experience, and community service. Jack Callahan '22 and Reid Blackmon '22 exemplify what it means to be a Balanced Man. During the spring semester, active members engaged in brotherhood events throughout Tuscaloosa. Whether throwing axes at Civil Axe Throwing or celebrating the Alabama basketball run at R&R Cigars, Chapter members made the most of their study breaks. In April, the Alabama Beta softball team was once again crowned champion in the intramural softball league, our fourth title in five years. Another round of congratulations to our brothers excelling both in and out of the classroom! Brothers also engaged in various community service and philanthropic activities. At the beginning of the year, the Chapter generously donated over 100 masks to our partner philanthropy, Big Brothers Big Sisters of West Alabama. In March, brothers worked with the UA Arboretum to help maintain their plant life during COVID-19. In April, the Alabama Beta brothers picked up nearly 550 pounds of trash as part of the Black Warrior River cleanup project. We also want to spotlight one of our members, Seth Hudson '24, who created the Help Others Run Home initiative, which supports his local community's homeless population in Montgomery, Alabama, by creating more access to affordable housing. To do this, Seth ran the Montgomery Half Marathon, working with the Mid-Alabama Coalition for the Homeless and River City Church to raise over $200. He hopes to continue working toward his goal of affecting as many people as possible within his local community. These are only a few of the many activities and achievements completed this year that demonstrate and uphold our values of Virtue, Diligence, and Brotherly Love. We have had such a promising year, despite the challenges, and we are all incredibly excited for more normalcy this semester.
