Grateful, blessed and humble: these are the words that come to mind as I sit down and write this column. We have a wonderful village of staff members, a House Director, contractors, security guards, parents, Alumnae Advisory Committee (AAC) and Chapter House Corporation (CHC) members who work diligently and lovingly to make our house a home. ese past 18 months have been challenging, but through it all, we have found our new normal. To Ann, Jill, Walter, Nancy, Juan, Alba, Isela, Mario, Charlie and Guillermo: thank you for all you do each and every day! Summer was busy and we have a full house this fall semester. We added wainscoting and new paint in the dining room and new window panels and paint in the hallway of the living room and bookshelves. We are in the midst of an overhaul of the internet in our house as we switch from USC Wi-Fi that has been discontinued to our private internet service that will be much faster. ank you, Robin Greenway MacGillivray '74, for overseeing this tedious task! As we go into the holiday season, may we all find time to enjoy gathering with family and friends. Chapter Volunteers Work Diligently to Make Our House a Home In Memoriam Honoring Former CHC President Mary McIllece Green Rooney M ary McIllece Green Rooney '74, who served California Gamma Chapter as President of the Chapter House Corporation from 2007– 2012, passed away peacefully at home on April 30 surrounded by her husband, Peter Rooney, and her two sons, Brett and J.B. Green, after a heroic seven-year battle with cancer. In her five years heading CHC, Mary was responsible for spearheading a new alumnae fundraising campaign, planning and implementing major house improvements and initiating a communications campaign for alumnae that includes this newsletter. A property condition assessment she oversaw identified high-priority, long-term capital improvement and repair needs for the chapter house and, during her tenure, the house received its first major upgrade since its construction in 1973. In 2007, Pi Phi's Grand Council mandated that all Pi Phi chapter houses have up-to-date fire safety systems, which USC's Panhellenic also endorsed. Fire sprinklers, strobe lights, horns and smoke detectors were installed, which resulted in new ceilings being installed and affected areas repainted. Soffits were also installed to cover exposed piping and protect the integrity of the Paul Williams, FAIA, building design. Existing outdoor areas were torn up to install underground pipes connecting to a new fire service water line. Additional special projects led by Mary (Continued on page 2)
