For instance, on a recent Wednes- day, Severide wasn't on "Chicago Fire" and Burgess wasn't on "Chicago P.D." — Kim Jefferies, via email A : There can be a variety of reasons, one of the biggest being whether the given week's story has any need for the character and actor in question. Each of executive producer Dick Wolf's NBC "Chicago" series services a large cast, and a "Fire" episode focused largely on Casey (played by Jesse Spencer) might have little time or material for Severide (Taylor Kinney). Also, in some instances, an actor on one of the shows might also have another project concurrently ... so writing them out for an episode or several enables them to do the other job as well. By now, a lot of the "Chicago" actors have been on their respective shows so long, they inevitably know their time in the spotlight there will come again. Q : So, is Mayim Bialik the permanent host of "Jeop- ardy!" now, or what? — Dave Klein, Clovis, Calif. A : "Or what," if those are the two options at the moment. After serving as one of the many guest hosts earlier in the year, the veteran of "The Big Bang Theory" and "Blossom" stepped back in as a longer-duration interim host after the controversy that saw original choice Mike Richards removed from the "Jeopardy!" job. Bialik is splitting the duties with one of the show's champi- ons, Ken Jennings, through the end of the calendar year ... and then, unless an announcement was made after this column was written, we'll see. If Bialik's run continues, her schedule also involves fitting in production of her Fox sitcom "Call Me Kat," but those involved undoubtedly would make that work if it came to that. Q : Has Mark Harmon really left "NCIS"? — George Hyatt, via email A : As a series regular, yes. The fact that he and his character Leroy Jethro Gibbs exited the CBS drama in mid-October wasn't as much a surprise as the "when" of it, since it had been rumored for a while that Harmon would be reducing his involvement in the show drastically. The plot that put Gibbs at odds with his NCIS bosses, making him an outcast from his unit, provided the means for a long goodbye that started last season and stretched into the start of the current one. However, Harmon remains an executive producer of "NCIS," so he'll still have a least a toe in. And actors and characters who supposedly have left the series can resur- face — Cote de Pablo's Ziva David being a prime example — so we wouldn't rule out possible return appearances by Harmon/Gibbs down the line.
