Page 16 November 8 - 14, 2021 BY JAY BOBBIN When you think of great movie car chases, "The French Connection" likely comes to mind immediately. Turner Classic Movies marks the 50th anniversary of director William Friedkin's Oscar-winning police drama with a showing of it Saturday, Nov. 13 ... and though it's a tense tale all the way, the behind-the-wheel fury of New York cop Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle (played by Gene Hackman, who won his own Academy Award for the film) while he pursues a felon-carrying overhead train ups the stakes considerably. Overall, the fact-inspired picture based on a Robin Moore book captures the feel of the city brilliantly as Doyle and his partner (Roy Scheider, who got his own great car chase several years later in "The Seven-Ups") try to smash an international heroin operation. The film also took Oscars for editing – not surprisingly– and best adapted screenplay.
