Arts & entertainment ‘Dirt, The Movie’ showing Sunday in Redding The Humanist Society of Redding will present the film "Dirt, the Movie" at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1, the Redding Library in Community Room B. The film is open to the public, admission is free and donations are welcome. Dirt is the outer layer of the Earth and the place where nearly all the world's vegetation comes to life, but the 20th Century was a bad time for dirt — the rise of corporate farming practices has led to reliance on fertilizers with negative long-term effects on the soil, while clear-cutting of rain- forests and global warming are making it harder to grow the food the world needs, making work- able soil an increasingly scarce commodity. Filmmakers Bill Benenson and Gene Rosow offer a witty but incisive look at dirt, what's in it, how it's used and how we must protect it in this documentary film. Paintings seem to spring to life in Disney artist exhibit Former Disney painter and designer, Angela Edmonds, opens an unusual new exhibition at the Red Bluff Art Gallery on Friday, Aug. 6. The exhibit, entitled "Ani- mals in Action," includes original paintings by the artist, as well as an animation, "The Running Horse." "I love to use animals as my subject manner because they can tell you a bit of a story through their body language. I use my skills as a cinematographer to make my paintings bold and dynamic. I paint with strong com- position, solid shapes, intense val- ues, and vivid colors to capture a viewer’s eye,” Edmonds said. “I want my oils to come to life. This exhibit will show paintings with different animals running, walk- ing, fighting or communicating with one another through action.” series of paintings. The artist credits watching her husband, Russ, animating on a hand-drawn animated feature film for Disney. "Watching him, I came up with the idea of bringing a paint- ing to life, one painting after another. I created a series of oil painting on canvas making a sequential action and projecting their photographs onto a screen at a constant rate, producing move- ment and the illusion of life," Edmonds said. Courtey photo Angela Edmonds holds her new painting, one of a series of 10, that illustrate the movement of a horse running. "The Running Horse" anima- tion, which will be showing at the Opening Night Reception from 5 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 6, is based on a "These paintings are not roto- scoped (tracing a live-action ref- erence for animation.), but hand drawn and painted. I took advan- tage of having an animator to make sure the action is right. These paintings are not a copy of film, but from my imagination and skill. You will see the basic principles of animation in the series of painting, The Running Horse," Edmonds said. Edmonds started her art career as a layout artist designing back- grounds for Walt Disney Feature Animations. Now a Red Bluff resident, Edmonds and her hus- band, own Edmonds Studios Ani- mation, an animation production studio. Edmonds is represented by the Red Bluff Art Gallery, 601 Wal- nut St. and is a member of the artist-owned and run cooperative. An artists’ reception for her new exhibit will be held at the gallery 5-8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 6. Music will be provided by Jen- nifer O’Connor, a unique singer- songwriter.
