2B – Daily News – Thursday, July 29, 2010 Cahill, Suzuki send A’s over Rangers ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Trevor Cahill allowed two hits over eight innings, Kurt Suzuki homered and drove in two runs and the Oakland Ath- letics beat the Texas Rangers 3- 1 on Wednesday night. Cahill (10-4) struck out four and walked three as he took over the team lead in victories, breaking a tie with Gio Gonza- lez. Rajai Davis had three hits for the A’s, who are 8-3 since the All-Star break. Oakland pulled within 7 1/2 games of the AL West-leading Rangers. Cahill improved to 5-1 for GIANTS Continued from page 1B majors in saves. ‘‘If we keep playing like that, I’m sure we’re going to win a lot of ballgames,’’ Florida manager Edwin Rodriguez said. ‘‘We never gave up. We came back, we battled and we tied the game against the best closer right now in the National League ... and that was a very nice comeback.’’ The Giants’ offense had 17 hits overall while notch- ing their 17th win in 21 games. Huff singled twice to sur- pass 1,500 hits for his career while Aaron Rowand and Edgar Renteria added two hits apiece but it was Torres who came up the biggest for the Giants. ‘‘We’re not going to give up, that’s our mentality,’’ Torres said. ‘‘I was talking to (special assistant) Will Clark and he was talking about staying through the ball. I always ask because I want to learn every day.’’ Much of the attention in San Francisco these days has been centered on Posey, the Giants’ young catcher who has been a smashing hit since being called up from the minors on May 29. Posey is on the verge of breaking numerous fran- chise rookie records and has been one of the top hitters in the majors since joining San MCT photo Giants' Andres Torres is mobbed by teammates after his game- winning hit in the 10th inning against the Marlins Wednesday. Francisco. Posey’s streak is one shy of the Giants’ rookie record of 22 set by Hall of Famer Willie McCovey in 1959. Uribe had a two-run sin- gle in the first then drove in two more with a triple in the third. He also beat out an infield single in the fifth. Over his last 11 games, the veteran infielder is batting .356 (16 for 45). Chris Ray (4-0) pitched the 10th for the win. Jonathan Sanchez earned a fourth straight no-decision despite leaving with a 9-5 lead. Sanchez gave up an RBI double to rookie Logan Morrison in the third — Morrison’s second hit in the big leagues since being called up Tuesday — and a solo home run to Paulino in the fourth. Murphy hit a pinch-hit three-run homer off Sanchez in the sixth to cut San Francisco’s lead to 9-5. Uggla hit a two-run shot off reliever Denny Bautista in the seventh to make it 9- 7. Uggla’s homer, his sixth in six games, tied the fran- chise career record of 143 set by Mike Lowell. It came after a wild pitch with two outs and two strikes allowed Gaby Sanchez to reach base. ‘‘I can’t explain it and I’m not going to try to,’’ Uggla said of his streak. ‘‘I’m going to roll with it and ride it out. I probably never would have thought that I’d be right where I’m at in the Marlins statistical books but I am and we’ll see where it goes.’’ After Uggla’s homer, the Marlins scored twice off Wilson in the ninth to tie the game. Sanchez had an RBI groundout while Uggla hit a ground-rule double to drive in pinch-runner Emilio Bonifacio. Club America’s Aquival- do Mosquera’s takedown on Johnson in the box set up Adebayor’s penalty kick in the 36th minute. Adebayor scored with his kick past goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa. Johnson insisted the penalty, which appeared marginal, ‘‘was 100 percent a foul.’’ Club America tied it early in the second half on Esqueda’s shot from the right corner. Daniel Montenegro of Club America was denied in each half on shots that deflected off the posts. Adebayor almost won the game in regulation, but his shot in the 88th minute hit the crossbar above Ochoa. Less than a minute later, Montenegro’s penalty kick was too high. Gates gets $36M contract Couples back home for US Senior Open Gates agreed to a $36.175 million, five-year contract extension, with $20.4 million guaranteed, according to a person familiar with the deal, who spoke on the con- dition of anonymity because the figures weren’t released. The deal averages $7.235 million per season from 2011-15. A college basketball star at Kent State, Gates blos- somed from a rookie free agent in 2003 to a superstar who is a three-time All-Pro and six-time Pro Bowler. With three other star players unhappy about their contracts, talks with Gates apparently intensified this week. Gates and other veterans are due to report to training camp on Thursday, with the first full-squad practice on Friday. ‘‘I’ve been blessed my whole career to be with one team,’’ Gates said in a statement released by the team. ‘‘It’s always good to get it out of the way. The goal is to win a championship. We all are human and it becomes a distraction even though you might not want it to be. It’s always great to be able to go ahead and do what you need to do and get it out of the way.’’ SAMMAMISH, Wash. (AP) — Fred Couples walked off the 12th green Wednesday leaving caddie Joe LaCava holding a putter that wasn’t to be used on this hole. There was a gallery waiting and autographs to sign, a scenario that plays out during nearly every momen- tary break Couples gets at Sahalee Country Club. Consider it the price of coming home. ‘‘I’ve been signing more auto- graphs than paying any attention to the golf course,’’ he said. Couples arrived at the U.S. Senior Open this week as a tournament favorite and a hometown hero. The Seattle native is trying for his first USGA title at any level, playing just 20 miles from the Seattle public course where he learned the game growing up. He hasn’t lived in Seattle for decades. Yet the region still considers Couples its own. ‘‘To win here, it would rank right up there as any other tournaments probably besides Augusta,’’ Couples said. ‘‘This is just like a U.S. Open; no one’s going to tell me any differently. It’s very tough out there. So to win here would be, you know, like winning a U.S. Open. And I’m from Seattle, so I would think it would be a great, great accomplishment. It would be very spe- cial for me.’’ His presence represents a perfect confluence of timing and luck. If the PGA Championship had returned to Sahalee this year as originally planned after the tournament’s lone turn as PGA host a dozen years ago, Couples would be an outsider trying to wedge his way into playing in his hometown through a special exemption. Instead, the PGA pulled out and the USGA moved in bringing the Senior Open, which begins Thursday. This will be Couples’ first turn at a U.S. Senior Open. He turned 50 in October and became an active Champions Tour member this year. You don’t have to live up to a certain expectation because they want the best for you. That helps you.’’ But it’s also a challenge in balanc- ing commitments and expectations. Couples served as the honorary chair- men for the event, although his main duty was putting together a youth clin- ic on Tuesday. There are interview requests and old friends trying to pull Couples in many directions, not to mention the endless stream of memo- rabilia to autograph at every turn. ‘‘This honorary chairman stuff is a little mind-boggling but it’s over on Sunday,’’ Couples said. his career against the Rangers, 2-0 with a 0.87 ERA in three starts at Rangers Ballpark, one of the toughest stadiums in the majors for pitchers. The Rangers broke up the shutout bid in the ninth on Vladimir Guerrero’s RBI single off Michael Wuertz, who gave up the game-winning, two-run homer to Nelson Cruz in the 10th inning Tuesday night. Craig Breslow struck out major league batting leader Josh Hamilton and Cruz for his first save of the season and sec- ond of his career. A’s closer Andrew Bailey was unavailable due to back spasms. Rangers starter Colby Lewis (9-7) matched Cahill until Suzuki’s one-out homer in the sixth. Suzuki added an RBI single in the eighth off Darren Oliver. Suzuki later scored from second on Jack Cust’s single that was misplayed for an error by Cruz in right field. Lewis went seven innings and 116 pitches, allowing one run and five hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. Cruz went 1 for 4 to stretch his career-best hitting streak to 16 games. Texas had runners at the cor- ners with two outs in the fourth, but Cahill struck out Cruz look- ing to end the threat. NOTES: The A’s confirmed that RHP Ben Sheets is out for the season due to a torn flexor in his right elbow. Sheets was examined by Rangers team physician Dr. Keith Meis- ter, who determined that Sheets has a tear and would not pitch again this season. A’s manager Bob Geren said no surgery is currently planned, although Sheets needed an operation to repair the same injury when he missed the 2009 season for the Milwaukee Brewers. ... Rangers 2B Ian Kinsler was rested. Kinsler’s two-base error — when he failed to cover second base on a steal attempt — led to an unearned run for the A’s in Tuesday night’s game, Oak- land’s only run. Rangers man- ager Ron Washington chalked it up to a ‘‘mental lapse,’’ but said the miscue had nothing to do with the day off. ... Oakland has won five of six on the road. ...
