Thursday, July 29, 2010 – Daily News – 5B State campaign trail Whitman, Brown to meet in at least 2 Calif debates SACRAMENTO (AP) — Republican gubernatorial candi- date Meg Whitman says she has accepted three fall debates against Democrat Jerry Brown, all of them in Northern California. Whitman’s campaign announced Tuesday that the first debate will be Sept. 28 at the Uni- versity of California, Davis. The Sacramento Bee, KCRA-TV and Capitol Public Radio are co-spon- sors. Brown previously challenged Whitman to 10 debates and forums around the state, including one this Saturday at which he is scheduled to appear. Whitman also agreed to two debates in October — one spon- sored by The Fresno Bee and Univision and one sponsored by NBC and Dominican University in San Rafael. Brown previously agreed to the Dominican University event. His campaign said Tuesday that he would consider the Oct. 2 Fresno debate. Some Dems wary as Obama ramps up fundraising WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is accel- erating his fundraising pace, inviting Democratic candidates to decide whether the money he draws is worth the Republican attacks that a presidential visit might also bring. For some, it’s no easy choice. Democrats need millions of dol- lars to defend dozens of House and Senate seats this fall. But Obama’s approval ratings are sinking well below 50 percent in several key states. Obama is headlining four Democratic fundraisers in three days, including one Tuesday night, and hosting another four events next week. For now he’s playing it safe, holding the eight events in noncompetitive states or in a competitive place where he’s sure to be embraced: his home state of Illinois. As is true with most presi- dents, candidates from his party know there’s often a political cost to the hundreds of thousands of dollars a presidential visit can net. In Missouri, Republican Sen- ate candidate Roy Blunt is airing a TV ad showing Democratic opponent Robin Carnahan cam- paigning with Obama during his July 8 fundraising visit to Kansas City. The ad says Carnahan would be a ‘‘rubber stamp’’ for Obama’s policies. A recent statewide poll for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and KMOV-TV found that 57 percent of likely Missouri voters disap- prove of Obama’s performance as president, while 34 percent approve. Among independent voters, the president’s disap- proval rate was 63 percent. The poll showed Blunt lead- ing Carnahan in the race to suc- ceed retiring GOP Sen. Kit Bond. Having the president visit ‘‘is a double-edged sword,’’ said Brian Walsh, spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee. Carnahan raised a lot of money from the event, he said, but it also provided grist for Blunt’s new ad. ‘‘We’d welcome him to cam- paign in states like Indiana, Kentucky, Arkansas,’’ Walsh said of Obama. ‘‘These are states where his agenda is deeply unpopular.’’ White House officials say Obama will campaign vigorously throughout the nation. ‘‘The fall campaign boils down to a choice between those who want to keep moving forward and those that want to take us back to the poli- cies that got us into this mess,’’ said White House communica- tions director Dan Pfeiffer. ‘‘The President will help make that case across the country.’’ Obama is clearly the biggest draw for Democratic donors in general, and he’s spending signif- icant time this week and next at events where guests have been asked to give the legal maximum of $30,400 per election cycle. Only one of the eight fundraisers is tied to a specific candidate: Senate hopeful Alexi Giannou- lias of Illinois. PAC to support congressional candidates SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A major Democratic political action committee says it will give money and volunteer time to two California congressional candidates in competitive races. Democracy for America on Tuesday named former Irvine mayor Beth Krom the winner of its online competition for funding. The Democrat is chal- lenging Republican Rep. John Campbell in Orange County’s 48th District, where the GOP has a 15-point registration advantage. The PAC founded by former Democratic National Commit- tee Chairman Howard Dean in 2004 will give Krom’s cam- paign $5,000 and raise another $20,000 from its members. DFA will also make a $5,000 contribution to Bill Hedrick, who is challenging 44th District Rep. Ken Calvert, a Republican. More than 66,000 people voted on the DFA website from among candidates nationwide.
