2A – Daily News – Thursday, July 29, 2010 Community people&events COMMUNITY CLIPS Carl Moyer funds Applications are now being accepted by the Tehama County Air Pollution Control District for Carl Moyer grant funds. Projects to be considered for fund- ing are agricultural engine projects which will be lim- ited to diesel to electric conversions only and agricul- tural off-road equipment — i.e. tractors, etc. — will be eligible for funding but will require a project life of five years. The application deadline is set for Aug. 4. The Carl Moyer program provides funding to local businesses and government agencies to offset the incremental cost of replacing heavy-duty diesel engines and engine retrofits. Eligible projects will be funded based on emission reduction cost-effectiveness. Applications are available by contacting the Air pollution Control District Office at 527-3717. Golf scramble The 16th Annual Memorial Pat Van Ornum Chari- ty Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, Aug. 21, at Oak Creek Golf Course. SECRET WITNESS 529-1268 A program of Tehama County Neighborhood Watch Program, Inc. Setting it straight A story in Saturday’s edition titled “Author pro- motes book with bicycle trip from Los Angeles to Portland” contained misinformation. James Kaelan and Miles Kittridge are bicycling from Los Angeles to Seattle. The article omitted Kitchel’s 15-year-old son, Luke Kitchel. If you feel a factual error has been made in a news story, call the news department at 527-2153. Plan now, fair time is coming The fair is ninety years young. That's right, ninety years. Red Bluff Garden Club thinks you can make it the best fair in ninety years. All you have to do is sup- port the fair by entering. Every year the fair grows in size. There are now 406 Divisions with many classes in each divi- sion and each year new classes are added. Every- one can find something to enter. The deadline for entry forms is Aug. 31, so your decision about what to enter needs to be made in August. The Floriculture and the Ag. Horticulture deadline is Sept. 17 giv- ing you time to see what is growing and ready at fair time. Exhibitor Handbooks with all the details are available at the Tehama District Fair office, the Red Bluff and Corning Chamber of Commerce offices and the Umpqua Bank in Los Molinos. Also, on page three of the handbook is all the Best of Show winners for 2009. If they can do it, so can you. It's almost Halloween, you could enter a scare- crow or carved pumpkin and have your Halloween decorations completed. What about creating a wheelbarrow garden, a decorated tree or straw bale? Those cookies you make that your family loves or the jelly which turned out so tasty can both be great entry choic- es. The lap quilt, pot hold- ers or maybe the afghan you crocheted last winter would look lovely dis- played at the fair. Maybe you could enter that beautiful container plant or that gorgeous chrysanthemum as a cut specimen. To help you get your brain working on all the things you could enter, some of the specific exhibit division are: Flori- culture (our favorite), from individual flowers to cut branches, potted plants and arrangements, both fresh flowers and dry but no artificial, as well as outside gardens; Ag Hor- ticulture, from novelty vegetables to seeds, fruits and nuts; Home Arts, from beer and wine to baked foods and confec- tions; Preserved Foods, from canned vegetables, to jams and jellies, Cloth- ing and Textiles, from bedroom and living room accessories to clothing; Arts and Crafts, from dec- orative painting to hand- crafted items; Fine Arts, Photography and Creative Writing. All of these are just some of the still exhibits. Children and teens can also enter much the same departments only specifi- cally for juniors. There are so many departments you're bound to find one you enjoy. You'll find yourself a little richer too since many classes pay premiums and award ribbons. By participating in a community event, an exhibitor learns more about their area of inter- est. When you enter you really look at the blue rib- bon winners to decide how and why that item is better. When children enter, they begin to look very carefully at what they have produced and how they can make it better. This is a valuable “life skill” to learn. Surprise your family and friends when they see your name on the exhibitor tag at the 2010 Fair. Red Bluff Garden Club meetings are open to the public. The next program is at 12:45 p.m. on Tues- day, Aug. 31. It will be ‘Iris, Care and Unusual Species’ by Lorna Bon- ham. Polsley Home Destroyed By Fire A house on north Johnson street, belonging to Harry Polsley, was gutted by fire last night at 10:30, being a total loss. The house was occupied by his sister, Kate Polsley, and her household goods were almost all lost in the fire. The department had difficulty in getting water on the fire but when they got the system started quick work was made of the blaze and it was kept from spreading to other homes in the block. – Daily News, July 29, 1920 Courtesy photo Andrew Rieland, left, and Mike Keeler, right, officers of Red Bluff's Vesper Masonic Lodge present Project Director Kim Berry A $1,000 check for the Back to School Project. Thanks to generous donations such as this one the project will be accepting a second round of applications from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at 836 Washington St. in Red Bluff. Book Barn celebrates 16 years in business Book Barn opened it's doors August of 1994 at 619 Oak St. in Red Bluff and will be celebrating its 16th anniversary in 2010. Owners Jack and Linda Gaines moved to Red Bluff in June 1991 from Orange County. Linda was a VP with Union Bank in the real estate construction lending department for Orange and Los Angeles counties. Jack is a registered professional engineer and licensed general and electrical contractor. They moved to northern California to enjoy a slower pace of life and small town. Once they were settled, it was clear that Red Bluff needed a quality used book store. With Jack's building abilities and Linda's finance background the business was created. In addition, both are avid readers. A vacant lot was purchased and book store building was constructed by the Gaineses. It took about a year to build and acquire used book inventory. The Book Barn has been profitable each and every year and business continues to thrive. Red Bluff is filled with loyal customers. The shop also is visited by many travelers through the city. Jack is active in the Corning Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) and an avid long distance/tour bicy- cle rider. Linda is a member of the Sun County Quilters of Red Bluff and Annie's Star Quilt Guild of Chico. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. The store number is 528-2665 In April, Linda's sister, Kathy Roussin, opened a sis- ter store in Oakhurst. If you are traveling, be sure to stop and say hello. Book Barn, Oakhurst is at 40396 Hwy 41 #F and can be reached at (559) 658-7733.
