T he 1950s were an excellent decade for Chapter activities. The popular Spring Formal (deemed Red and Buff Ball), Christmas dances, and spring picnics are all notable. Other functions of note were the usual recruitment events and football games, but for the most part, we knew when to focus on our main purpose at UA: to get a college education. The Chapter also had its share of campus luminaries. Among them were SGA President Bob Vance '52; Dewey Camp '56, Jason's, ODK, and editor of the campus humor magazine, Rammer Jammer; Royce Bryant '57, ODK and Corolla business editor; and Bill Mace '56, Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Fellow '50s-era Alumni Jim Merrell '58, Stan Williams '60, and I were a part of Alumni who revived the Chapter in the late '90s and completed the nearly $4 million Chapter House Renewal Project. We then made up the newly formed House Corporation Board from 2003 to 2014. Another indication of the exceptional quality of young men during the '50s are the 28 Alumni who have received a Jefferson J. Coleman Alabama Chapter Outstanding Alumnus Award. As the years have passed and they have had to move on, the Chapter is indeed fortunate that other Alumni Brothers from later decades have stepped up to fill their shoes. This article was written from memory and some inquiries made of a few '50s-era Brothers, but mostly from the former.
