INSIDE PUBLISHER’S PEN by BILL BOWMAN Every now and again I am going to use this space to recognize, with Bouquets, those community events, achievements, people, businesses and organizations that reflect and define our community’s quality of life. In addition, we are going to “drop bombs” on some who have disappointed us by failing to live up to basic minimum expectations. We will also weigh in and provide commentary with a third category called “What Were They Thinking?” So, look for these three icons in future editions, read and enjoy. Also, feel free to send us your own bouquets, bombs and W.W.T.T. comments and insights. We would love to hear from you. Bouquet: Articulate and excited about returning to North Carolina, Lt. Gen. Jack Stultz is energized about bringing the U.S. Army Reserve Command to Fort Bragg. He noted the move from Fort McPherson, Ga., will be challenging, but the payoff will be the 1,300 to 1,500 new jobs coming to Fayetteville and the Cape Fear region. This is a very good thing. Welcome General Stultz! Bomb: The medians installed at the intersection of Morganton and Reilly Roads have local residents angry, organized and already signing petitions to have them removed. The reality is that only time, and the “official” crash data over the next year, will determine if this was a good decision. In the meantime, local convenience will be trumped by an attempt to reduce accidents, deaths and property damage. We’ll see. Bouquet: Yay! Tax free days are coming to North Carolina Aug. 6-8. This means many back to school items, with limitations, will be spared the 8 percent North Carolina sales tax. W.W.T.T.: The NAACP’s and Wake County School Board’s confrontation with each other, while the overall concern for the welfare, education and development of their own children are being ignored — all while the county is posting some of the lowest test and achievement scores in the state. More debt! Will these extended unemployment checks actually act as a stimulus or just keep people from seeking employment? Good questions that no one can answer. This is getting scary. Bouquet: The Tea Party by any other name? Call this movement what you like, but an advocacy for limited government, fiscal responsibility and free markets makes you wonder ... What’s not to like? Bouquet/Bomb: Yay, for the BP oil cap in the Gulf of Mexico. But will it hold and how severe are the leaks of deadly methane gas? Curious minds want to know! (See Sharon Valentine’s opinion piece in this issue!) W.W.T.T.: Shirley Sherrod, Georgia’s Secretary of Agriculture, was fired as a result of the Obama Administration’s typical “Fire, Ready, Aim” management style. Everyone has apologized, so what’s next? A lawsuit? Duh. Bouquet: Welcome Home Brigadier General Ed Reeder, Jr. Reeder took command of the U.S. Army Special Forces here at Fort Bragg last week. You can’t get much more local than Reeder. Everyone is extremely proud of you. Congratulations! On another note, don’t forget that July 28, the day this issue hits the streets, is the last day to vote for the Best of Fayetteville. Vote online today! And, look for the winners in the September 8 edition. But if you want a sneak peak at the winners, join us at the Best of Fayetteville party on September 7 at Lido’s in downtown Fayetteville from 5:30 to 7 p.m. See you there! As always, thanks for reading Up & Coming Weekly! BILL BOWMAN, Publisher. COMMENTS? Editor@upandcomingweekly.com.
