The Department of Veterans Affairs released a new regulation effective July 13 that will make it much easier for veterans of all wars to be granted disability for post-traumatic stress disorder, therefore making it easier Cumberland County veterans. PTSD is a condition resulting from exposure to direct or indirect threat of death, serious injury, or physical threat. Symptoms include sleep anger, and memory loss. If a veteran did not have a combat award on the VA list, he or she was required to complete a questionnaire giving the VA information that they could go to a company record to verify. This questionnaire included the name of the veteran’s unit, deployment dates, and a 60-day date range in which the incident occurred. This had to describe an incident in which he or she was involved that would have been recorded. Although this change has come about because of the large number of veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan who have been diagnosed with PTSD, it is just as important to our older veterans who are asked to remember dates and places of incidents that occurred 40 or 50 years was requiring them to remember things that they worked hard to forget. Recalling the incidents often brought veterans to tears or aggravated their symptoms. Under the new rule, VA will not require corroboration of a PTSD stressor related to fear of hostile military or terrorist activity if a VA by the veteran supports a diagnosis of PTSD and the veteran’s symptoms are related to the claimed stressor.
