4B – Daily News – Tuesday, July 27, 2010 Craigslist users: Surreptitious smoker’s stressful secret Dear Annie: I am 18 years old and have been hiding a dirty secret from my parents for two years. When I started dating my current boyfriend, I devel- oped the nasty habit of smoking. At first, it was easy hiding it from my par- ents, but it’s getting a lot harder and riskier now. My father wouldn’t understand, and it would absolutely break his heart if he knew. My mother is beginning to ask why my boyfriend and I so often say we’re going out to get a cup of coffee. We’re really going out so I can smoke. My boyfriend is also tired of the Be careful out there! … A Washington mother and her teenage son spotted a car for sale on Craigslist last week and when they went to view the vehicle, were robbed by a man wielding a claw hammer. Last Month, a New York radio reporter was fatally stabbed by a 16-year old he met on Craigslist. And earlier this month, a Minnesota woman answering a phony Craigslist ad for a baby- sitter was shot to death … Sites like Craigslist are not responsible for content they do not create … the site offers few protections against swindles, scams and even outright violence … The Boston Globe -- April 26, 2009 In the news recently at CNN.com is horrifyingly chilling, yet all to familiar story with a violent ending for a Washington State resident. James Sanders placed an ad on Craigslist for a diamond ring he wished to sell, and was murdered in his home on April 28, outside Tacoma. Associated Content Kate E. Rand -- May 8, 2010 In an effort to claim deposits and more from unsuspecting renters, scam artists are using actual real estate listings and then passing themselves off as the landlords through postings on Craigslist ... similar scams have been reported that are stealing people’s identity and money. And it isn’t just through email but also face to face. Take for example a recent case in Sacramento, where a renter in the middle of an eviction decided to raise money for his next place. He placed an ad on Craigslist offering to rent the very apartment from which he was being evicted. It was not until he had four prospective tenants give him a deposit that he was busted. Joplin Independent -- August 20, 2009 The Internet is a giant universe that’s expanding every day, and it’s not always a safe place. Anyone from anywhere can access the local Craigslist pages from Redding or Chico. Craigslist’s email address shielding offers some security for ad placers. But computer hackers are skillful. Scam artists posing as interested potential buyers can often charm away an ad placer’s street address, phone number or other personal information with a tempting email response to a Craigslist ad. The vast majority of the Daily News’ print and online readers live in Tehama County. Many are your friends and neighbors; they’re a lot like you – not strangers from all over the Internet who might be scammers or predators. Here’s another important distinction: Almost all of the Daily News’ classified ads are taken and reviewed before publication by real live people who work in our offices in Red Bluff. The Daily News does not accept every classified ad we receive. To protect our readers, we reject suspicious-looking or misleading classified ads. The fact that Craigslist classified ads are free has been an understandable attraction. It’s too bad that for some – perhaps many – there has been a much higher price to pay for using Craigslist than the cost of a classified ad in their local newspaper. I am not ready to quit yet, so that would make confessing even harder. What should I do? — Bad Habit Dear Bad: Your parents proba- bly can smell the smoke on your hair and clothes, and over time, smokers can develop yellowing teeth and fingers, so you might not be hiding as much as you think. And quitting will become more difficult the longer you wait. That said, you are 18 years old and an adult. Your choices, even bad ones, belong to you. Hiding your addic- tion has obviously become too stressful, so confessing will allow you to get the deception off your chest, even if it disappoints your parents. It’s time to face the music, honey. He explained that high blood pressure can damage the kidneys and informed me that mine were only working at about 50 percent capacity. He told me a transplant would be neces- sary in the future. His words didn’t hit home until 13 years later, when my kidneys actually failed and I ended up on dialysis. Life as I knew it came to a halt. Luckily for me, my cousin Darlene came to my rescue and donated her kidney in March of 2000. Since then, I have a new appreciation for life. I don’t take anything for granted. I’ve run marathons and played vol- leyball. And I learned about the biennial National Kidney Founda- tion U.S. Transplant Games — an Olympic-style event for transplant recipients of all ages. I became determined to participate so I could show the world what organ dona- tion makes possible. I won medals in track and field and helped lead my team to gold in volleyball in the past two Trans- plant Games events. This summer, I will travel to Madison, Wis., for the 2010 National Kidney Founda- tion U.S. Transplant Games, July 30-August 4, where I will once again compete in track and field, racquetball and volleyball. We wish you the best of luck breaking your record from last year. Dear Annie: This is for ‘‘Still Miss Him,’’ who didn’t want her mother to remarry after Dad died. I had been married for 41 years when my husband passed away after a long illness. Eighteen months later, I met a widower who had been married 46 years. We were together for five years. I do not regret this relationship, as he gave me everything my first hus- band couldn’t. He was a loving and devoted man and filled every cor- ner of my life with great memories. I will miss him forever. Please tell that daughter to be happy for her mother. Iowa teen known as ’Deer Magnet’ after hitting 5 DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A central Iowa teen has earned the nickname ‘‘The Deer Magnet’’ after hitting five deer in the past year. Seventeen-year-old Kacee Larson of Conrad says her string of bad luck began last July when she was driving home from her job at an ice cream shop. She saw the deer an instant before hitting it. Larson’s second collision happened a few months later, while she was driving to church on a Sunday morning. The streak continued. After Larson hit her fourth deer, her pastor’s wife advised her to start praying before driving. Larson says was doing just that Friday when she hit her fifth deer. The crash totaled her minivan.
