Page 6 Alpha Lambda Remembers N eal Lamar Shively '46-518 passed away on May 20, 2019, in Mercer Island, WA, at the age of 95. Neal was born June 5, 1923, in Dallas, OR. He grew up on a farm in Willamina, logging and harvesting hops with his father. Aer high school, he attended Native American school for sheet-metal training and was hired at Columbia Aircra. In 1943, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and trained to be a gunner and flight engineer on the B-29 bomber with the 20th Air Force, flying 30 missions in WWII. Aer his military service, he attended Oregon State and met Florence Mary Marshal Hanny at OSC. ey were married on Friday the 13th of June 1947, resulting in a lucky 71 years of marriage. He graduated from Oregon State with an industrial engineering degree. In 1949, he was hired by Boeing Airplane Company to manage an engineering group developing new programs and experimenting with army aircra and missiles. He later was involved with the NASA Apollo moon landing program in Houston as head of the Contracts Organization for three years. He retired from Boeing in Seattle aer 38 years. Neal, with his twinkling eyes, will be remembered as a devoted husband and steadfast father, cherished grandfather, a favorite uncle, a truly gracious gentleman, and a passionate outdoorsman. F red Lee Bottemiller '49-569 passed away at his home in Willow Creek, CA, on July 3, 2019. He was born in e Dalles, OR, on July 17, 1930, and he grew up as the second of three brothers in Portland. He met Joyce, the love of his life, in grade school. Fred's incredible work ethic was evident at a young age. He delivered papers before school, then worked in the crops aer school and picked hops on weekends. Fred's brother, Chuck Bottemiller '47-527 was also a Lambda Chi at Oregon State. Fred enrolled in the pharmacy program and, along the way, inspired many to join him on his journey, including his brother, Ron, and Joyce's brother, Norm. He graduated in 1952, he and Joyce were married, and he started his pharmacy career in Portland, but it was not long before he was recruited to work in a pharmacy in Ukiah, CA. Fred later was recruited to Barnes Drug Store in Arcata. He eventually purchased Barnes Drug store and was co-owner of Mad River Hospital Pharmacy and Willow Creek Pharmacy. Fred's mentorship and inspiration to many was evident when eventually two nephews took over these businesses. Fred and Joyce had three children, Karen, Craig, and Cary "Jay." e family enjoyed many weekends together, boating, water skiing, and camping in Big Lagoon, Trinity Lake, and Richardson's Grove. Fred and Joyce built a cabin in Willow Creek, which became a hub for family gatherings and parties. Fred was an involved member in the Arcata community and offered work-study opportunities through Arcata High School. He and Joyce were active members at Faith Lutheran Church, where he taught Sunday school for many years and gave occasional sermons while Joyce played the organ. ey both loved to travel and were fortunate to visit many countries throughout the world and spend winters in Mesa, AZ, as "snowbirds." He will be fondly remembered as a genuine, caring, and generous man, who was the life of the party and always had a joke to tell. K arl Myron Byers Jr. '49-581 passed away on October 19, 2018. Karl, also known as Dad, Bapa, Great-Bapa, Scout, and Uncle Karl, was born in Monterey, CA, on March 9, 1929. His family moved from California to the Willamette Valley in 1931, and he graduated from Dallas High School in 1948. Karl blazed the trail for his children and several of his grandchildren to also become graduates of Oregon State University. Karl was a strong believer in the philosophy of "never stop learning" and he lived his life that way. He was proud to have his son, Bob Byers '76-969, and his grandson, Chris Byers '10-1717, become Lambda Chis at OSU. Karl and Bob participated when Chris was initiated in January 2010. Karl married his high school sweetheart, Muriel McKnight, in 1951 when they were both attending Oregon State. Aer Karl's graduation in 1952, they moved to the McKenzie River area where Karl began his career in the timber engineering profession with Hale Brothers. He ended his career retiring from Mazama Timber Company in 1990 yet continued to work in the tree farm industry as a contractor, as well as farming trees on his own property. He was always out planting trees, trimming trees, cutting brush around the trees, and enjoying his four-wheel mule method of transportation about the tree farm. Karl and Muriel raised three children, Lynne, Susan, and Bob. He loved his children's spouses, Dewey, Ivan, and Karen. He loved and adored his 10 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an avid outdoorsman and, as young as 13, he was trapping, hunting, and fishing in the Val Setz area of Marion County, as well as in Eastern Oregon. e family vacations were always deer hunting in eastern Oregon where Muriel's family had been hunting for many years. Karl passed his love of the outdoors on to his children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren. It was not uncommon to find him toting kids around his property in his mule or on his tractor. Karl will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He leaves a legacy of wisdom, curiosity, intellect, and great hunting and fishing stories that will be cherished and retold throughout time. D avid "Don" Warren Peterson '50-595 passed away September 5, 2019, in Portola Valley, CA, at the age of 88. He was born on June 8, 1931 and raised in Tacoma, WA. Aer graduating from Oregon State and the NROTC program, Don served as an airborne CIC officer for three years in the Pacific before earning an MBA from Stanford University. Always having worked in finance, he retired aer 20 years as chief financial officer of Morgan Equipment Company in San Francisco and moved back to the Puget Sound region before returning to the Bay Area to be closer to family. Don will especially be remembered for his wry sense of humor and his lifelong love of ice cream and jazz music.
