Although the lines are blurred now, there was a time not long ago when a starring role in a major motion picture was far more prestigious than one on television. So to make that jump was viewed as something of a step down. Still, some actors at or near the height of their popularity tried it and discovered it wasn't the career purgatory it was then considered to be. One was Donna Reed. The supporting actress Oscar winner for the 1953 wartime drama "From Here to Eternity" found a second career in the 1958-66 ABC sitcom "The Donna Reed Show." As Donna Stone, the suburban wife of pediatrician Alex (Carl Betz) and mother of Mary and Jeff (Shelley Fabares, Paul Petersen), Reed was front and center of a series that was a ratings success and she herself was nominated for four Emmy Awards. It also represented yet another laurel in a distinguished career. "The Donna Reed Show" can be seen weekday mornings on Decades and streamed on Amazon.
