Each conversation empowered Maddie to completely be herself and had her counting down the minutes until she could return to the Kappa house. As Maddie began to forge friendships with the sisters from her class and the active members, she also realized how involved and spirited Gamma Zeta's alumnae were. Maddie knew right after she graduated that she wanted to dive in and be an active Gamma Zeta alumna and build upon the historic legacy of the chapter. "I decided not only to get involved on the Kappa Kampaign board, but to personally donate because I wanted to pay back the chapter for all the incredible things it has done for me. The undergraduate experience is so special and [is a time] for women to gather the best memories that will last a lifetime," Maddie said. "I don't want there to be anything holding them back. You only get to be an undergraduate Gamma Zeta once, and I think it's vital that alumnae support that experience and set the tone for these women after they graduate." Maddie was deeply honored that her sisters elected her to serve as chapter president, which allowed her to hone her leadership skills more than she could have ever imagined. Just before Maddie began her term as chapter president, she proudly represented Gamma Zeta at the biannual National Convention in Denver, Colorado. Maddie couldn't wait to take what she learned from convention and help Gamma Zeta excel across the board. "It was the experience of a lifetime to be surrounded by Kappas from all over the country. The bond that we all felt for one another was unique," Maddie said. "To know that each of the thousands of women in that enormous convention center all had something in common was so special, and it made me realize that I was surrounded by sisters, not strangers. That trip is when I realized not only how much I loved my own chapter at Gamma Zeta, but how amazing Kappa Kappa Gamma was." Living in Apartment 24 and the president's suite were both wonderful experiences for Maddie, but little did she know as a collegian that those wouldn't be the only rooms she would live in at the Kappa house. Along with working at Tuscon Medical Center and working on her graduate school classes, Maddie has served as Gamma Zeta's interim housemother this spring. "Dealing with the pandemic hasn't been easy on anyone, including the women at the university. Stepping in and living at the Kappa house has been an enjoyable experience that has been so fulfilling for me," Maddie said. "I have told the members of the house board that I have learned a lot about running a house (more than most 24-year- olds!), but I couldn't be happier to give back to the women and the chapter house that gave me a home away from home when I needed it." Working in the medical field and serving as the Gamma Zeta housemother during the pandemic have given Maddie a unique perspective about the importance of public health and human connection. Whether it's safely reuniting in person or reconnecting virtually, Maddie encourages you to reach out to your Gamma Zeta sisters and strengthen your "Kappa konnections." As you reflect with your sisters about how Kappa has impacted your life, Maddie hopes you'll give back to Gamma Zeta with a contribution to the Kappa Kampaign so collegians and future members can benefit from the same life- changing opportunities. "Whether it is a few dollars or hundreds of dollars, you absolutely can't put a price on the love, joy, and friendship young women can experience in this chapter," Maddie said. "These donations go toward scholarship, maintaining our beautiful home on campus, and giving undergraduates the tools to make incredible memories that will last them a lifetime."
