Monday, July 26, 2010 – Daily News – 3B Facing the future without fear It was 11 years ago this month when I first heard of the term "Y2K." Remember that? A horrible doom settled over the world, as we feared that mankind's ability to become technical would finally do us in. The problem had to do with computers and the habit of shortcut- ting dates to reflect only the last two digits in referencing the year. The theory was that the world would be hurtled into untold chaos when suddenly "99" became "00." How would a computer know it should be 2000 instead of 1900 or perhaps even 3000? What if com- puters didn't agree and some revert- ed to 1900 while others took a fear- less leap to, say, 2600? The collective fear warned us that planes would fall from the sky, cars would sit idle, investments and food would disappear, and life as we knew it would come to a screeching halt. Fear is a funny thing. You don't need to do an Internet search for "fear" to find it. Open yourself to it and fear will find you. It's a bleak medical diagnosis. Company lay- offs. A stack of bills. Car trouble. A double-dip recession and failing housing market. Salt is evil, right? That's the new nutrition mantra. But wait: What about people who need iodized salt to prevent iodine deficiency? Take our quiz on sources of this micronutrient. 1. Why does the body need iodine? a) To stimulate the pituitary glands and enhance growth b) To produce a thyroid hormone that keeps the gland functioning c) To raise the heart rate of those with abnor- mally low blood pressure 2. How much iodine does the average person need per day? a) 150 micrograms b) 500 micrograms c) 1 gram (1 million mcg) 3. According to the journal Science, iodized salt was introduced in the United States in 1924 because of what problem? a) Goiter b) Gout c) Gingivitis 4. One gram of iodized salt contains 77 micro- Whether you're concerned about your health, your home, your ability to provide for your family or your retire- ment account, one thing is certain: Fear and uncer- tainty about the future come from every angle and wait around every corner. Here are some tools that will keep fear from overtaking your heart and mind: • Remember. Fear for the future easily can overwhelm us these days, but we can run it out of our lives through the simple act of remem- bering. The fears we had over Y2K now seem silly because nothing horrible happened. We moved seamlessly into a new millennium, while the opportunists who scared people into buying underground shelters, guns and freeze-dried food quietly slunk away to wait for their next opportu- nity. Cars did not shut down; planes remained airborne; food supplies were not interrupted. Have you ever been unem- Quiz: Iodine deficiency grams of iodine. Which food contains more than that? a) Cod (3-ounce serv- ing) b) Shrimp (3 ounces) c) Tuna, canned in oil (3 ounces) 5. By far the highest level of iodine found in food is in dried seaweed. How many micrograms are in \ ounce? a) 150 b) 607 c) 4,500 6. Most people's diets supply less than 1,000 mcg of iodine a day. But in Japan, where many eat seaweed daily, how much iodine is consumed daily, according to the journal Modern Nutrition in Health and Disease? a) 9,000 mcg b) 80,000 mcg c) 1 million mcg ployed? Remembering how that worked out will help you face it in the future. Concentrating on the lessons you learned and the experi- ence you gained will help you to face your next chal- lenge with confidence, not fear. Mary Hunt Everyday Cheapskate • Trust. Another way to combat fear is to grow your faith. Faith is confidence in something you cannot see or fully understand. It is trusting in the power of God to work all things in your life for good. It is acti- vating what you believe. When your faith is stronger than your fears, faith wins. Trusting what you know to be true is the way to face fear and doubt. • Control. Your ability to control your thoughts is a powerful weapon against fear. Choose carefully what you read and the television shows you watch. Fill your mind with positive and wholesome information and watch your fears slip away. No matter how difficult the chal- lenges may be for you today, you can choose to face them with fear or confidence. Choose wisely. Support our classrooms, keep kids reading.
