2A – Daily News – Monday, July 26, 2010 Community people&events Birth — Day No complaining allowed "It was good to see you. Have a great rest of the day," he said as we left the restaurant. "I plan on it," I replied, "Oh yea, I forgot to tell you that I made a decision not to complain for a whole week," emphasizing "whole" as if I was a making a decades-long commitment. "Really?" He stopped in his tracks, eyeing me as if I had pro- claimed that I wouldn’t eat for seven days. "That’s going to be dif- ficult." "You think I complain a lot?" I playfully prodded. "No, you know that’s not what I Courtesy photo Danny and Emily Day, a daughter, Rileigh Abigail Day, 6 pounds, 15 ounces and 19.75 inches long, born at 6:11 a.m. on May 17, 2010, at St. Elizabeth Community Hospital in Red Bluff. Roadwork for July 25-31 The following roadwork projects will take place from July 25 to July 31 in Tehama County: • On Highway 36E from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 26- 29 a guardrail/ concrete barrier project will be taking place from 3.7 miles east of Paynes Creek to 7.7 miles west of the town of Mineral. There should be no delay. Setting it straight –––––––– It is the policy of the Daily News to correct as quickly as possible all errors in fact that have been published in the newspaper. It’s just, well, personally, I’d find it hard to go a whole week without griping about something. It’s a way of letting off steam." "Could be," I admitted. "But, I want to give it a try. I think it will improve my outlook." He measured the concept. More thinking out loud than talking, he muttered, "It’s pretty rough at work these days. Cutbacks. More pres- sure. I don’t know if I could do it." Pausing to reflect upon the idea, he hesitantly expressed, "I guess… I could go an hour without com- plaining…" Discovering his resolve, he appended emphatically. "Sure! Why not? It’s worth a shot, I’ll try it!" "Sounds good to me," I glanced at the clock; "It’s 1:17. At 2:17, let ‘em loose." It’s been an "interesting" week since I made my pledge. Although I like to consider myself to be rela- tively upbeat and opti- mistic, I have arrived at the stark realization that I kvetch more than I like. I think I’m similar to most people; doing the best I can to stay positive during trying times; yet if there’s a reason to gripe, I’ll dig it up. Traffic backed up on highway 101? That’s worth a casual carp — even if no one’s in the car with me to hear it. My web-guy is running behind on deadlines? Grouse away. The lady in front of me at the grocery store decides to write a check when I’m on a tight schedule? Voila, une autre cause d’crankiness! Should I craft an ad campaign for some of my days, it would be "Got Crabby?" Scott Q. Marcus several of whom are crotchety, so I’m not sure I buy his argument in its entirety. That said, he issues the one-week-no-com- plaint challenge and I decided it couldn’t hurt to give it a go. Fast-forward seven days: I slipped a few times and I caught myself on several occasions before I let one rip. Should a teacher be grading me, I assume I would have earned a B plus, maybe even A minus. But, what I noticed was that I got more done, I enjoyed it more, and it also manifested itself by pos- itive changes in the way I eat and exercise. My net worth is about where it I’m taking this attitudinal plunge because I’m reading The Million- aire Mind by T. Harv Eckert. If not obvious by the title, his assertion is that wealthy people think differently than folks like us (assuming you’re not rich of course). I wouldn’t mind being affluent; I think I’d actually enjoy it. However, I’m engaged by the premise because I find his concepts apply more to "success" in general, rather than the accumulation of material goods specifically. Eckert contents rich people do not complain, they don’t blame, and they don’t justify poor habits. I do know some "rich" people; was this time last week. Yet, I am more content. And I’m not going to complain about that. Scott "Q" Marcus is a THINspirational speaker and author. Since losing 70 pounds over 15 years ago, he works with overloaded people and organizations who are looking to improve communication, change bad habits, and reduce stress.
