The Alpha Omegan p. 2 www.ufato.org In MeMorIaM D r. Frank Maturo Jr. '48, affectionately known as Doc, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 29, 2020, at 91 years old. Doc spent his youth in Georgetown, Kentucky, and went on to graduate from the University of Kentucky where he joined the Mu Iota Chapter of Alpha Tau Omega. Subsequently, Doc would earn his postgraduate degrees from Duke University. Doc spent his career teaching, advising, and counseling others as a zoology professor at the University of Florida, a position he held from 1958 until his retirement four and a half decades later. He was also the director of the University of Florida Marine Laboratory at Seahorse Key. Doc was a lifelong Alpha Tau Omega Brother, from serving as Worthy Master of Mu Chapter to his 51 years of service as the faculty advisor for Alpha Omega Chapter. He helped generations of young men become leaders, and his guidance to students extended across campus as he spent many years as an advisor to Florida Blue Key. On top of that, Doc was a charter member and past president of the Rotary Club of Greater Gainesville and a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Gainesville, where he enjoyed ushering. Doc will be missed by his friends, family, and Alpha Tau Omega Brothers. Judge Stephen H. Grimes '48 served on the Second District Court of Appeal of Florida for several years. He was a justice of the Florida Supreme Court from 1987 to 1997 and chief justice from 1995 to 1997. He retired in 2016 as partner with Holland and Knight LLP. Paulk '59 is an ATW Foundation Board member and interested in ensuring the values and benefits of ATW are available to future generations of college students. Prokes '66 enjoys retired life on Clearwater Beach with his wife, Betsy, and remains connected to ATW by keeping in touch with his Brothers across the U.S., serving on the house committee, serving on the Alpha Omega Board of Trustees, attending ATW Congress, and by attending athletic events. Email: rdhowell49@gmail.com John Sansbury '70 shares that Bruce Pelly '70 recently retired as the director of Palm Beach International Airport after 35 years. John appointed Bruce to the position while serving as Palm Beach County administrator in 1975- 86. As the Palm Beach County administrator, John oversaw a multimillion-dollar budget and 4,000-plus employees. He was recognized as the nation's youngest county administrator by the National Enquirer when he accepted the position at 26. He lives in West Palm Beach, Fla. McVeigh '75 is Treasurer of the House Corporation and Board of Trustees. He wants to ensure that the active members have the same opportunities that he had as an undergraduate at Alpha Omega Chapter. His influence spanned decades, and he was a mentor to everyone fortunate enough to have spent time with him. He made us all better ATWs, and for that I am personally grateful.
