"The critical elements of the property have been well maintained over their lifetime, and the building itself remains in remarkably good physical condition given the wear and tear it has endured over the past nine decades. However, the building has become functionally and economically obsolete for use as student housing by either undergraduate fraternity and sorority members or independent apartment dwellers. When you combine the history of the building and its Greek traditions with the size and location of the real estate, then the property has tremendous historic significance and value. I am persuaded from a purely business point of view that there is a fiscally responsible pathway to successfully complete this proposed restoration and expansion project. If we do not get this problem taken care of right now, then we may forfeit this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity." – Gene Commander '72, Alpha Phi Building Committee OUR PLAN FOR ALPHA PHI T he chapter house at 2112 Lincoln Way is functionally and economically obsolete. A major renovation and expansion of the facility is needed to provide undergraduate members and the alumni volunteer leadership an alternative that is competitive within the Iowa State Greek community and private housing market in Ames. While the building is structurally sound and masonry is in good condition, interior finishes are worn, electrical and plumbing need replaced, and the site needs extensive maintenance. Additionally, we find it important to provide supplemental funding for future Alpha Phi undergraduate members through academic and leadership scholarship programs. This investment is designed to ensure the long-term financial success of the house corporation, along with the best fraternity experience for Alpha Phi's undergraduate and alumni membership. Ensuring the success of not only our future membership but the great facility that Alpha Phi calls home is a task that must not be taken lightly. We are at a crossroads, a time to decide what Pike can and will be. This is an opportunity to grab hold of the years of history, leadership, and brotherhood that led so many of us to be proud Pikes and ensure those opportunities are available to the next generation of young men at Iowa State University.
