June 14 Flag day Flag Day is the day our country adopted the first U.S. national flag on June 14, 1777. The first flag, thanks to seamstress Betsy Ross, featured the same 13 red and white stripes we see today, representing the 13 original colonies. The number and arrangement of stars, however, has changed as the number of states has increased. The 50th star for Hawaii was added in 1960 and the flag has remained the same since. As a symbol of our country and people, the flag should be treated with respect and honor when on display. Here are some rules about displaying the flag: • The flag may be displayed on any day of the year, but should not be displayed on days when the weather is inclement. • The flag should be displayed only from sunrise to sunset on flagpoles in the open, but it may be displayed at night if it's illuminated. • The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise. • When the flag gets tattered or in poor condition, it should be destroyed in a dignified fashion, preferably by burning. Most American Legion posts will conduct an annual ceremony, often on Flag Day, to retire old or worn flags. You could also ask your local Boy Scout or Girl Scout troops about retiring your flag. June 20 Father's day Where would we be without dads? Or dad jokes? On June 20, be sure to let your dad know how much he means to you! Father's Day is not a new holiday… it originated in medieval Europe, as a day to honor fathers and fatherhood. Now it's a holiday held all over the world — that's how important fathers and father figures are in societies everywhere. However, the date fluctuates around the world. In Spain, for example, it's held on March 19, while in New Zealand, it's the first Sunday in September. The first Father's Day Celebration was held on June 19, 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington who organized the celebration on her own father's birthday. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a proclamation calling for Father's Day to be celebrated on the third Sunday of June. Honor dad by helping to prepare his favorite meal today, or helping with the yard work. Give him the comfiest chair in the house and let him choose what you watch on TV!
