F or most of us, Pi Beta Phi is a sisterhood that gives us an extended family and a home away from home. For the Lattures, it's more than that; Pi Phi is a long-lasting family tradition. It all started when Ann Latture Atkinson '69 pledged Mississippi Beta Chapter in the fall of 1968. Jamie Latture Collier '72, Ann's younger sister, has spent some time during the pandemic outlining her family's storied history with Mississippi Beta. "No one in our family had ever been in a sorority before Ann joined Pi Phi," Jamie said. Coming from Hot Springs, Arkansas, Ann didn't know anyone at the University of Mississippi. However, their father graduated from Ole Miss, so the family attended the Homecoming football game every year growing up. In the summer of 1968, Jamie attended a Girl Scout Wider Opportunities event and met a counselor who happened to be a Mississippi Beta sister, Beth Williston Webb '68. "I introduced Ann to Beth," Jamie said, "and it turned out Beth was the only person Ann knew going through recruitment." Ann loved Pi Phi, and Jamie found comfort in having two familiar faces in Mississippi Beta. During Girl Scout camp, Jamie met members of several sororities at Ole Miss, but she knew Pi Phi was where she belonged. "I felt more at home at the Pi Phi house and knew that was where I wanted to be," Jamie said. "Ann was still in the chapter when I pledged and was the Chapter President that year." Being a member of Pi Phi enhanced the collegiate experience for both sisters. "Pi Phi made college so much more fun for me," Jamie said. "It instantly gave me a group to belong to along with the opportunity to meet people who I never would have had I not joined Mississippi Beta." She has also found this to be true as an alumna, living in three different cities since graduation. "When I meet a Pi Phi sister, we always have an instant connection," Jamie said. As an alumna, Jamie has served as President of the Jackson, Mississippi, Alumnae Club and joined the Mississippi Beta Chapter House Corporation (CHC) in 1999. Throughout the pandemic, Jamie says all members of CHC, in conjunction with the Alumnae Advisory Committee (AAC), have worked together to make the chapter facility as safe as possible. "I have loved serving on the Chapter House Corporation because I have nothing but respect for the women I work with," Jamie said. "It's also great meeting the young women who are Pi Beta Phi: a Family tradition Jamie Latture Collier '72 Outlines Her Family's Storied History with the Mississippi Beta Chapter Ann Latture Atkinson '69, Jamie Latture Collier '72, Carol Latture Graham '75 and Cindy Latture Harris '76. active members of the chapter." Jamie serves as CHC Treasurer, a position she has held for nearly 18 years! "It is exciting to see how the chapter house has evolved from the ski lodge it was when I pledged to the current façade we installed during the 2006 renovation," Jamie said. "I am looking forward to seeing the end result of our planned addition and renovations in the future." Ann and Jamie have two younger sisters who also joined Mississippi Beta: Carol Latture Graham '75 and Cindy Latture Harris '76. "All four of us were very active in the chapter during our college years," Jamie said. "Ann served as Chapter President, I was Treasurer, Carol was Recording Secretary and Cindy was Recruitment Chair." In 1977, the Mississippi Beta Chapter voted to initiate their mother, Hazel Branch Latture '77. "All four of us were there for Mom's Initiation, and we each pinned our Pi Phi pin on her," Jamie said. "She loved the sisterhood and was so honored to become part of it with us." Hazel remained active in her local alumnae club for as long as her health allowed, and her Initiation was one of the highlights of her life. The Latture's Pi Phi tradition at Ole Miss continued when Jamie's daughter, Margaret Ann Collier Knutson '07, joined Mississippi Beta in 2006. Margaret Ann served as Vice President Membership as a collegian. Carol also has two daughters who joined Arkansas Alpha Chapter at the University of Arkansas.
