We thank them for all they brought to our brotherhood. They will be missed. Don Steffen '48 entered Chapter Eternal on January 31, 2021, at 93 in Johnston, Iowa. He married Genevieve Ward on June 8, 1949. They had two children, two grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Don retired as president and chairman of Hebron Brick in 1992. He spent his career as a ceramic engineer and as a plant manager in various structural clay businesses. Don was a member of the Fired Clay Structural Industry and a fellow of the American Ceramic Society. Don was a Mason and a member of the Elks. He enjoyed golfing with Gen and traveling. They liked to attend ISU football games and watch sports on television. Don sang in the church choir and spent time reading. Bert Doyne '50 entered Chapter Eternal on April 8, 2020, two days shy of his 90th birthday. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lynne, to whom he was married 65 years. He is survived by four children and six grandchildren. Along with joining ATO at ISU, Bert was a University bridge champion. He graduated with a degree in industrial economics. Bert's business career took his family to four states. In 1968, the family moved to Lexington where he established First Choice Installers. Bert was an avid fisherman. One of his great joys was piloting his own plane for business and pleasure. He was also an accomplished scuba diver. Bert was a past president of the board of High Street YMCA in Lexington. John Maxheim '53 entered Chapter Eternal on December 22, 2020. John came to Iowa State to pursue an engineering degree. Upon graduating, he had great success throughout his professional career. In 1978, he joined Piedmont Natural Gas Companies as president and COO. He continued to gain greater successes at Piedmont, eventually becoming CEO and chairman of the board. Through John's financial support of Gamma Upsilon, the John Maxheim Scholar scholarship was established and has been awarded annually to a Gamma Upsilon undergraduate. His generosity will be remembered, and he will be missed. ALUMNI NEWS Ronald Sley '53 is just trying to survive the COVID-19 crisis, like many others. He lives in Raleigh, N.C. Email: dkushlak@aol.com Rex Troute '75 shares that when he needed a kidney, two brothers volunteered to be a match. After the surgery in 2016, another brother paid for a Los Angeles trip to an ultimate rock concert. Rex is on the board of directors of Hope Haven, a nonprofit helping the mentally and physically disabled. "They are on the frontlines during this crisis." Rex lives in Burlington, Iowa. I served as secretary and on a campus committee.
