THETA CHI PAGE 3 The Benefits of Brotherhood Jesse Sands '12 Explains How Tau Chapter Helped Him Land His First Job J esse Sands '12 grew up in a small town, fairly unaware of Greek life. When he arrived at the University of Florida, he was overwhelmed by the size and scale of everything it had to offer. "I had the opportunity to make connections with some of the upperclassmen from Tau Chapter who recognized this and plugged me in with a great community in Theta Chi," Jesse said. "The brothers I met from that moment on continue to be some of my dearest friends to this day." Jesse saw the Chapter go through a transformation during his years as Tau got accustomed to life back in a new house on Fraternity Row, with all the benefits and trials that came with it. "The challenges we went through at that time seemed daunting," Jesse said. "There were trip and homecoming restrictions along with other obstacles we had to face. However, these are really the moments I remember most fondly as they only drew the brotherhood closer together." To help get the brotherhood on the right track, Jesse served as Chapter president in 2013 and was also heavily involved in Dance Marathon, Student Government Production, and Florida Blue Key. After graduating from the University of Florida with a master's degree in accounting, Jesse says that several Tau Chapter alumni made active efforts to connect him with his current job. "They helped support me through the recruiting and hiring process along with continuing to mentor me once I started my career," Jesse said. "Tau was hugely impactful in setting a strong trajectory for my professional life." Today, he works as a strategy consultant for a large firm, and he has the brotherhood to thank for helping connect him with the right opportunities. He has had the fortune of paying forward the gift that alumni gave him through the professional recruiting process. If any brothers are interested in consulting, Jesse encourages them to reach out to him. In addition to networking, Jesse has supported Tau financially as well through the Celebrating the Legacy, Forging the Future capital campaign to build the new Chapter House. "Tau Chapter has supported me in a lot of ways both in college and after graduation," Jesse said. "This felt like a tangible way to give back." He encourages his fellow alumni brothers to consider giving back to Tau as well, whether it's financially or on a volunteer basis. "Think back to your college memories and how many of those involved Tau Chapter in some way, shape, or form," Jesse said. "There are many ways to give back; figure out what works best for you." Jesse says that he doesn't stay in touch with his brothers as frequently as he would like to, so if you haven't spoken with him in a while, expect a call soon!
