2A – Daily News – Wednesday, July 21, 2010 Community people&events Emblem Club donates Jennifer and Suzanne, You Matter Well, the signs have been waved, the bags handed out, the hugs have been given and the balloons have been launched. The annual One Minute Hug was a huge, sweaty, hugging success. Over 150 people came out to hug and celebrate their families. For me, it was another moment of pride about the community I live in. Planning an event of this magni- tude takes a lot of behind the scenes work. Meetings, gathering supplies and coordinating takes months to make sure all the bases are covered. This year we had a group of mag- nificent men and women who were committed to making this year's hug the biggest yet. Two of these women had a unique motivation to make this event memorable; their chil- dren. Most of our community knows who Jennifer Botell and Suzanne Schoelen are. They recognize them for their losses. They have both lost sons suddenly. I met them because of their loss, Courtesy photo The Opportunity Center received a $300 donation from the Red Bluff Emblem Club. Connie Ross, club past president, presented the check to Lynn DeFreece of North Valley Services. but I write about them because of something else. Everyone expects us to feel compassion for them. All of us can sympathize with them and some can empathize with them. They are mothers who have lost children, but they are also so much more. Jennifer and Suzanne are exam- ples to all of us that it is entirely possible to live through the unimag- inable. It is entirely possible to experience your greatest fear, your greatest loss and find a way to make it through. I know that these women do not see themselves as community leaders or cham- pions for others, they are far too humble for that. Neither of them has made total sense of what they are living, but instead of letting it stop them, they are putting on their big-girl britches and doing all they can to make a difference for others. Going through the plan- ning of the hug event, I became friends with Jennifer and Suzanne. When I first met them, I, like many others, had no idea what to say. Turns out that is one of their pet peeves. They understand that their situations are unique and that people may feel uncomfortable. Just so you know, there is no wrong thing to say. No need to go the other way in the store, they are open to talk. Jennifer and Suzanne, you matter because you are examples to all of us that every event in life just is until you attach meaning to it. You made conscious decisions to make your losses mean something bigger and better for your families. Both of you go out of your way to comfort other families who have lost loved ones. Faydra Rector Life Coach You are living examples of the best things you taught your sons. To be giving of yourselves, available to others and to never let a bad situation cripple your heart or your life. You matter because you are a testament to others who have sur- vived tragedy physical- ly, but have not survived emotionally. I know that some of the time you are simply walking by faith, taking one step at a time, but you are shin- ing examples of what is possible when tragedy strikes. You are exam- ples of hope, love, courage and faith. As a Life Coach, I have the awe- some opportunity to meet successful people and to expand my circle and fill it with positive people who bring more to the table than they take. I am grateful to know you and feel honored to call you friends. Faydra Rector, MA is a mental health administrator, author, public speaker, educator and life coach who lives in Red Bluff.
