I was certainly ready to learn, having just experienced the heartbreak of tossing a hopelessly spoiled head of romaine into the garbage. Luke Sheehy was a member of the California Smokejumpers, based out of Redding. Sheehy was struck by a falling portion of a tree on the Saddle Back Fire in the South Warner Wilderness about 15 miles southeast of Alturas. The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. Efforts to resuscitate Sheehy were not successful. He was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Alturas where he was pronounced dead. Drugs Corning Police received a report Monday evening that a group of youths at Northside Park on Colusa Street were by the swing sets possibly smoking drugs. Two youths were released from the scene. One was released to a parent. The other was cited and released on the charge of possession of concentrated cannabis less than 28.5 grams. Nothing further was available. Fires • A vegetation spot fire was reported at 9:13 p.m. Friday on Crosby Lane. The fire threatened several fences and exposure protection was set up for the 600 block of Crosby Lane. The fire was contained. Red Bluff Fire cleared at 10:29 p.m. No obvious cause was determined. • A fire reported at 3:51 p.m. Sunday on Breckenridge Street is being called suspicious. The fire, which was in dry grass next to railroad tracks, burned less than a quarter acre. • The lighteningcaused fire in a well pumphouse Monday in the 20400 block of Stoll Road, west of Red Bluff, destroyed the pumphouse. The fire was reported at 8:57 a.m. and contained at 9:10 a.m. • One of two lightening-caused fires reported at 8:58 a.m. Monday on Altube was slightly larger than initially reported. Vandalism • Someone at Carmona's on Walnut Street in Red Bluff reported damage to the door and a possible break-in attempt. • An employee at the Corning Smoke Shop on Solano Street reported that sometime during the evening an unknown person had removed the pins from the rear door to the business, possibly trying to get inside. Extra patrol was requested as time allows. • Someone on South Street in Corning reported Saturday afternoon that a woman had thrown a brick through the window of an apartment. • Extra patrol was provided to Kaufman Avenue in Corning during the night hours due to people removing the screens to vacant apartments along the alley and trespassing into the apartments. • The manager at US Bank on Solano Street in Corning reported Monday that a window on the northeast side of the bank had been shattered. • Someone on Solano Street in Corning flagged police down at 11:38 p.m. Friday to report vehicle tampering that had just occurred about 10 minutes prior. The person reported checking a vehicle after hearing a noise outside and finding the driver's side rear tire air had been let out and the gas cap was tampered with. Extra patrol was requested.
