In this Psalm, he compares God's eternality with the mortality of mankind. After making his case about the brevity of life, he then culminates it all with a prayerful request to God by asking, "So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom." No one knows exactly how many days they have left on this earth. Another biblical writer, James, tells us that it is foolish to boast about tomorrow, because we never know what a day may bring forth. Numbering our days, implies that we consider the value of each day as we live it. How many times do we get caught up in the trivial things of life and leave off the most important tasks? As a new day arrives, we must be diligent to live it on purpose. There will be a day that we will wake up, and it will be our last day on earth. Some people say that at the moment of death, our entire life passes through our minds. I am not sure if that is true, but I do believe that we will think about the things we desire the most. Perhaps in our last moments on this earth, we will think about telling someone that you love them. It may be a word of forgiveness or a prayer that we should pray. If we learn to "number our days", then we will live and die with fewer regrets.
