The Fayetteville Public Works Commission was recently recognized nationally
and statewide for its outstanding safety record including earning a 25-year safety
achievement award.
The North Carolina Department of Labor presented PWC its Outstanding Work in
Accident Prevention Award for 25 consecutive years of safety achievements.
PWC earned the American Public Power Association's Electric Utility Safety First
Place Award for attaining a low-accident frequency during 2012. PWC was one of
100 municipal utilities recognized (out of more than 2,000) and the achievement was
PWC's 22nd consecutive APPA safety award.
The North Carolina Association of Municipal Electric Systems presented PWC its
Electric Safety Award for no lost work day accident cases in 2012. The award was
PWC's 17th NCAMES award.

570 employees who daily enter confined spaces, work around electrical voltages up
to 230,000 volts, dig trenches more than 20 feet deep, handle hazardous chemicals,
operate heavy machinery and drive an average of more than 7,000 miles every day.
Celebrate the Fourth In Fort Bragg Communities
Local patriot wins July 4th Celebration from Destination America
Make a visit to the municipalities surrounding Fort Bragg around July 4th and it
is quickly apparent why Peter Greenberg , CBS News Travel editor, said this
community may be "one of the most patriotic communities in America" in his story
"Uniquely American."
"This community is proud to be the home of the defenders of the Constitution," says
John Meroski , Fayetteville Area Convention & Visitors' Bureau president and CEO.
"That pride is on full display during our Independence Day celebrations."
One 2013 celebration is largely courtesy of Destination America network and USA
Weekend. Fort Bragg soldier Jeff Wells entered the Destination America's Red, White
& You contest following the loss of Fort Bragg's annual Independence Day event. Of
3,500 entrants, Fayetteville was one of two cities chosen. Wells entry read "Due to
governmental budget cuts, there will be no post fireworks for Fort Bragg. Our post
is home to more Army tradition than any other installation, has produced the most
Medal of Honor recipients and is seen as the center of the Army Universe. To not have
a fireworks display on our nation's day of independence for those who have fought to
secure our freedom is not only a morale-degrading scenario but also a shame to those
who have sacrificed so much. As an Army leader, I believe a fireworks event celebrating
all that Soldiers fight for would not just boost morale but also let them know that,
despite our difficult fiscal times, they are not forgotten and still have the support of
those they fight to protect."
The City of Fayetteville's celebration starts at 4:30 p.m. in Festival Park on July 4th,
and ends with Fireworks at 9:15 p.m.. Entertainment includes the 82nd Airborne
chorus, a free kids area and activities courtesy of Destination America.
