4A Daily News – Thursday, June 6, 2013 Pastimes & Arts entertainment Big Brother and the Holding Company Big Brother and the Holding Company featuring Sam Andrew, Peter Albin and Dave Getzwill will be performing at the State Theatre in Red Bluff at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 27. Tickets and further information are available a t statetheatreredbluff.com or call 530-529-2787. Big Brother and the Holding Company is an American rock band that formed in San Francisco in 1965 as part of the same psychedelic music scene that produced the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Jefferson Airplane. The band was formed by Peter Albin, Sam Andrew, James Gurley and Chuck Jones in San Francisco, on Page Street in the Haight-Ashbury. The first official Big Brother gig was at the Open Theater in Berkeley, January 1966. Within a short time they became the house band at the Avalon Ballroom and began to develop a loyal following. The band had what Sam Andrew called a "progressive-regressive hurricane blues style," playing such tunes as Hall of the Mountain King, Coo Coo, That's How Strong My Love Is, and Down On Me. Chuck Jones left the band in 1966, and was replaced by Dave Getz who played his first gig with the band at the Matrix on Fillmore Street. Then Janis Joplin came to town, sang a couple of tunes with the band, and was enthusias- tically welcomed into the group, playing her first Big Brother engagement at the Avalon Ball room on June 10, 1966. June of 1967 brought the Monterey Pop Festival, a big shift for Big Brother. Peter, Sam, Dave and James, strong personalities in their own right, were wise enough to give Janis the freedom truly to be herself, and people responded to the power of the band and to Janis' truly unique voice. Janis Joplin left the band in 1968, and passed away in 1970. Big Brother has played all over the world and have become, in the process, better musicians than they ever were. Recent Big Brother and the Holding Company CD releases have been Do What You Love, the Janis Joplin boxed set on Sony, Live At Winterland, Hold Me which is a live recording of a concert in Burg Herzberg, Germany, and containing such tunes as Hold Me, Piece of My Heart, Ball & Chain, Down On Me, Summertime and Turtle Blues. This CD was the soundtrack for a Big Brother 40th Anniversary tour of the world. More recently have been the releases of The Lost Tapes in 2008 and Live at the Carousel Ballroom in 2012. In 2007, their 1968 album Cheap Thrills was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame Come hear the band and you will realize that they are recreating themselves and delivering a dynamic show. Jon Stewart to take 'Daily Show' break for a film NEW YORK (AP) — Jon Stewart is starting a summer-long break from anchoring ''The Daily Show,'' but it will be no holiday. He'll be in the Middle East making his first movie. While he's away, Stewart says he'll miss hosting the Comedy Central fake newscast. As he explains, ''People clap for me! That doesn't happen just anywhere.'' Stewart will be directing and producing ''Rosewater'' from his own script, based on a memoir by Maziar Bahari. This Iranian journalist was falsely accused of being a spy and imprisoned by the Iranian government in 2009 while covering Iran's presidential election. Pressed for more details about the film, Stewart cracked, ''I haven't seen it yet. But I hear it's good.'' After Stewart signs off Thursday night until returning Sept. 3, correspondent John Oliver will handle anchor duties on the New York-based show.
