The film, by director J.J. Abrams and writers Orci, Kurtzman and Lindelof, is a high-quality sci-fi action flick, but I can't say I loved everything about it. They used a broad canvas, which is exciting, but also tends to magnify errors. The film opens with a teaser-style introduction. Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and Dr. "Bones" McCoy (Karl Urban) are fleeing a temple by an erupting volcano on a planet in the Nibiru system. Apparently on a routine observation of a pre-First Contact society the crew of The Enterprise decided to ignore the Prime Directive and interfere in the course of a developing society. Since all of the Starfleet captains throughout the series (television and film) do that on a pretty regular basis, I will allow it as a legitimate plot point. Anyway, the opener sets up several subplots. First, Lt. Uhura (Zoe Saldana) is grumpy with Commander Spock (Zachary Quinto) for his reaction to a near-death experience in the volcano (remember, they're sweeties). Second, Kirk is grumpy with Spock for doing what Vulcans do, which is file accurate reports. Third, Kirk is in deep doo-doo with Starfleet Command because of the report filed by Spock. Back on Earth, Admiral Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood) fatherfigures Kirk back onto The Enterprise just in time for a series of terrorist attacks. Apparently, a disgruntled former Starfleet secret agent John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch) is manipulating Starfleet Command by strategically blowing things up. Although we never do get a casualty report proportional to the damage caused by the attack it is clear that there are now lots and lots of dead civilians and Starfleet officers. They figure out that Harrison has fled to Kronos (Klingon territory) via Scotty's (Simon Pegg) transwarp technology. When Kirk demands permission to run off after Harrison, Admiral Marcus (Peter Weller) loads him up with super-secret torpedo weapons and sends him off, despite the hostility between the Starfleet Command and the Klingon High Council. As the crew prepares for boarding, a suspiciously attractive new science officer (Alice Eve) reports to the Captain. Clearly, we are supposed to think that her beauty has caused Kirk to disregard all kinds of protocol, but this is just one more example of sexism, which abounds throughout the movie. I buy that Kirk is a Romeo, but I simply do not accept that Captain Kirk would fail to check out her flimsy excuse for boarding the ship. And then, we get a completely improbable stripping scene that panders to the male viewer to the exclusion of common sense. Shame on you science-fiction boys club! While at first Kirk is all gung-ho to administer some frontier justice to Harrison, Spock and Uhura talk him down to capturing instead of killing. But wait! There's more! Neither Harrison, nor the torpedoes, are what they seem. Revelations culminate in some overly lengthy action sequences (if I never see Zachary Quinto running again, it will be too soon), and a nice retelling of a pivotal scene from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
