The most deservedly famous, however, is also the most mysterious: Chartreuse. It is said that the ancient manuscript known as the Order of Chartreuse was already 500 years old when monks in Vauvert, France, received it. It described the 130 herbs along with the techniques used to make Chartreuse, but with their limited knowledge of apothecary, they could understand only bits and pieces of the complex recipe. After more than 100 years of study, they finally deciphered it in 1737, completing their first batch of the elixir in 1764.
