I've always been an avid fan of tequila, but these days I'm more passionate about mezcal. It's been nearly a decade since my first sip of real mezcal—not firewater from a bottle with a worm in it, but a spirit made with care and craft. Agave spirits are gaining popularity on cocktail lists and backbars, and mezcal is leading the charge. Espadín is the most accessible and affordable varietal because it can be sustainably farmed. Given the plethora of brands and styles, the category can seem a bit overwhelming, but here are a few reasonably priced recommendations for your well. Del Maguey Vida: A classic. Launched in 2010, this brand is recognizable by its green bottle; the mezcal inside is rich with smoke as well as notes of honey, banana, and roast agave. El Silencio: Robust with deep flavor, a little spice, and mild smoke. At 46% ABV, it has a creamy texture and a slightly earthy finish. Amaras Verde Momento: Notes of grass and fresh peach, with a soft hint of smoke and sweet cream on the palate. This is great for beginners and advanced mezcal drinkers alike. Whether you're sipping it neat or mixing it into a cocktail, mezcal is meant to be shared and enjoyed with others. ¡Dixeebe! and ¡Salud! —Alex Quesada Key Account Specialist, San Francisco
