2 A MEANINGFUL BROTHERHOOD What Jim Hill '88 Learned from Sigma Chi W hen Jim Hill '88 attended Kansas State University, he followed in the footsteps of his father, Don Hill '56, and uncle, John Hill '53. Both were also alumni of Sigma Chi, but Jim's parents encouraged him to check out all the fraternities during recruitment. "When I chose Sigma Chi," Jim recalls, "it was because I was most impressed with the actives and the quality of the guys in our pledge class." To this day he looks to the seven founder traits and the Jordan Standard for foundation as a father, as an organization leader, and as a citizen. Jim has enjoyed a 32-year-and-counting career at Procter & Gamble, which began with an on-campus interview his senior year at K-State. He was pleasantly surprised to learn that his interviewer was a Sigma Chi brother and could relate to the experiences Jim shared. "I never asked if that helped me get an offer, but it probably didn't hurt." Jim is also blessed with 31 years of marriage with Jada and three sons who make them proud every day. He often references his Sigma Chi values when talking to his sons or considering a potential new employee. "Sigma Chi taught me to respect that everyone has different temperaments, talents, and convictions. That has helped me tremendously in all facets of life, and seems to become more important every day." For Jim, the best memories of Sigma Chi tend to be the simple ones, such as hanging out at the house, road trips for basketball, and even being kept in line by the cook, Virginia. Other highlights included family: his father attended his initiation, and he was honored to participate when his brother, John Hill '96, joined as well. "Somebody told me once that if you're going to bother participating in something, then be a leader or take on something meaningful in it," Jim said. He served as Consul and Pro Consul as an undergraduate and has found this advice to be true in all facets of school, work, or community. "In the fraternity, class, or campus activities, do more than simply join. Make a difference." The current chapter has done exactly that, by Jim's observations. Having family in Manhattan, he visits at least once a year and visited last December for the anniversary celebration. "I was very impressed with the house remodeling, and the active chapter seems to making good progress. Seeing several guys from our era was awesome as well. Hopefully, we can have a bigger turnout next time." Jim and Jada have lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, for 20 years. As empty nesters they enjoy visiting their sons, traveling, and doing community work through their church. Jim invites any brothers passing through southern Ohio to look them up.
