SIGS PERSEVERE IN 2020 Inside... 2 A Meaningful Brotherhood 2 A Truly Historic Class 3 Chapter Officers 3 Taking Safety Seriously L ike with the rest of the world, 2020 has been difficult for the men of Sigma Chi. The closure of the chapter house in March created a challenging environment to finish the spring semester academically and carry out fall recruitment. But the men rose to the occasion, finishing with a GPA of 3.29, recruiting a class of 25 outstanding young men, and earning their first Peterson Significant Chapter Award in nearly a decade. Their summer, like everyone else's, was filled with uncertainty, as it was unclear whether Kansas State would open for in-person classes. When it became clear that classes would resume, the chapter officers, the house corporation, and the chapter advisory board began planning for the men to return in as safe a manner as possible in the era of COVID-19. Mom Rocky had hand sanitizers placed throughout the chapter house, and the men created a shift schedule for dinner among other social distancing measures. The house corporation had every member tested for COVID-19 before they could move into the house and rented an apartment in the building next-door to serve as a quarantine space for any men infected or exposed. The semester was only a week old when the chapter hit a major obstacle: brothers committed a serious violation of the alcohol policies of the general fraternity. Chapter operations were suspended while an investigation ensued. After finding that there was no hazing associated with the alcohol violation, the fraternity allowed them to resume chapter operations in mid-October and on November 7, the chapter initiated 24 pledges into Sigma Chi. In addition to social probation for the remainder of the year, the Sigma Chi chapter house will be an alcohol-free facility. The house corporation, advisory board, and most importantly, the men within the chapter, have embraced this change and recognize the opportunity this presents to focus more time and energy toward our three great aims: Friendship, Justice, and Learning. The challenges of 2020 continue and the spring of 2021 will offer much of the same, but the White Cross will guide the men of Sigma Chi and their alumni as we navigate these uncertain times. In Hoc, Doug Burton '89 House Corporation President Scott Green '92 Chapter Advisor Sigma Chi returns to the chapter house, excited to continue building our brotherhood!
