J anuary can feel blah compared to December's excitement. Finances may be tight after all the gift-giving, and your clothes may feel tight due to holiday meals. Plus, those cold days turn dark earlier, thanks to Daylight Saving Time. But don't despair! Here are five ways to help you steer clear of the doldrums: 1. Eat healthy foods. It's time to switch from holiday treats and rich comfort foods to fruits and vegetables and lean protein. Limit caffeine and alcohol. Choose water instead. 2. Move your body. Endorphins from exercise can work wonders on your mindset. Plus, taking care of your body – with whole foods and exercise – can help you maintain a healthy weight. 3. Get some sleep. Too little sleep can ruin your mental capacity. Take advantage of the early darkness and try to get at least seven hours of sleep each night. 4. Don't hibernate. It's easy to do during winter's chill, but putting fun activities on your calendar can give you the motivation to stay active and connected to friends and family, which will boost your mood. Do something that makes you happy. Volunteering is one way to stay occupied, and you'll feel better knowing you've done something to benefit others. 5. Focus on the positive. Remember that the season is only temporary – warmer weather and sunnier days are ahead. It's a new year, with new possibilities. A calendar newly empty of holiday commitments allows you space to create new goals and take steps to achieve them. It's important to take care of yourself, mentally and physically. If the post-holiday struggle starts to negatively affect your work, family, and health, talk to your doctor. And if finances are your challenge, give us a call at Redstone to see how we can help!
