One of the many things 2020 taught us all is that anyone can need help
from time to time. If you live in North Alabama or Middle Tennessee,
help can be just a phone call away.
By dialing 2-1-1, information is easy to find, and representatives are on hand to point callers
in the right direction if you need food, rent, or utility assistance; clothing; or shelter.
A network of nonprofit Community Action Agencies, local churches, and community groups
also provide resources for families.
ere are 20 Community Action Agencies throughout Alabama, according to Delores Mastin,
executive director for the Community Action Partnership Huntsville/Madison & Limestone
Counties, Inc. "We provide many services to include utility and home energy weatherization
assistance, transportation to medical appointments, and GED financial assistance. We are
a HUD Certified Housing Counseling Agency providing homebuyers education, financial
literacy workshops, and rental/homeless counseling. We also provide garden vouchers – even
in the colder months … to purchase seeds/plants to grow things like basil, kale, onions, and
potatoes to promote healthy living," Mastin said.
e list of services is long for the one-stop-shop agencies, she said. A full list can be found on
the agency website at caa-htsval.org or by calling 256-851-9800.
Also serving counties in northern
Alabama is the Community Action
Partnership of North Alabama,
which serves Morgan, Cullman,
and Lawrence counties. To access
additional information online, go to
capna.org or call 256-355-7843.
