The Bonds of Brotherhood Alpha Lambda Achieved Many Successes in 2019-2020 A s High Alpha, it is an honor to provide you with an update on Alpha Lambda. First, I wanted to share with you how my Alpha Lambda involvement began. My goal upon arriving at Oregon State was to take advantage of the many opportunities that the university offers. Growing up in the San Fernando Valley in the Los Angeles area, my parents worked very hard to ensure that my siblings and I had it better than they did. I am a first-generation student and the first in my family to attend college. Upon arriving on campus, I sought out opportunities to be involved and immediately became engaged on campus. Fraternity life was not in my plans at all. However, I wanted to learn as much as I could about everything going on at OSU. I attended a Greek life information session in which all fraternities had the opportunity to present. Lambda Chi Alpha stood out to me with how engaged the membership was on campus and in the community. It was also interesting to learn that Alpha Lambda had scholarship programs. Finally, it also struck me that Lambda Chi Alpha was the only fraternity that spoke about their diversity being a strength, emphasizing that they have members from several states and even other countries. As a result, I decided to attend recruitment events at multiple fraternities to explore whether they might be an option for me. At Alpha Lambda, I was immediately greeted by a member and we had a good conversation. This member then introduced me to another member and that pattern continued. It became evident that I had the opportunity to connect with everyone and that I was welcome to stay for as long as I wanted to. While I visited open houses at other fraternities, Alpha Lambda truly stood out as unique in the way the members engaged with me, other prospective members and with each other. Alpha Lambda had strong connections among the brotherhood. I became an associate member in the fall of 2017, joined various committees, ran our social media, and then was elected secretary as a sophomore and president as a junior. As times have changed, especially in the new decade, we have grown while remaining true to ourselves. Brotherhood is a strong emphasis for Alpha Lambda's leadership. We know that a healthy brotherhood provides opportunities for everyone and is the foundation for everything we accomplish as a chapter. We currently have a chapter size of 135 men, making us the largest fraternity on campus by a comfortable margin. Alpha Lambda has 100% of members involved in student organizations, along with several members holding offices in clubs and being founders of brand-new clubs. Alpha Lambda has built upon our success in intramural sports, winning the wheelchair basketball championship for the fourth year in a row. The chapter continues to participate in IFC Sing for the last three years, taking first place once and second place twice. You are undoubtedly aware of Lambda Chi Alpha's national philanthropy, the North American Food Drive. Our chapter so far has collected 40,000 pounds of food for Community Outreach Inc. in Corvallis. We also conducted our own local philanthropy event, Watermelon Bash and Can You Dash, raising over $10,000 for the local community center. Members also participated in other events on campus; this year we won Delta Gamma's Anchor Splash for the third year in a row, Alpha Chi Omega's Carry the Weight for the second year in a row, and Kappa Kappa Gamma's poker night. We aim to be the most competitive, largest, and tight-knit fraternity at OSU. Many good ideas come from both learning about our history and planning for the future of Lambda Chi Alpha. We appreciate the guidance from our alumni advisors. Without the time, energy, and care that our alumni base puts in, our accomplishments would not be possible. The undergraduate brothers of Alpha Lambda would like to extend our gratitude and appreciation for everyone who has paved the road for us to be here. I encourage alumni to reach out with any questions or to share your experiences. If you ever want to chat with me directly, I am always available. Yours in ZAX, Angel Medrano '18-1983 High Alpha (818) 322-7038 Page 4 Brothers host Corvallis First Responders for a workshop with coffee and donuts on a weekend morning. Members participate in Delta Gamma's dodgeball tournament for charity.
