Page 3 I t meant a great deal to Tyler Mannix '19-2035 and Jakob Kappus '19-2036 when Shane Nelson '89-1294 made a special effort to welcome them into ΛΧΑ with hand-written notes soon after they had gone through initiation. Both Tyler and Jakob have parents whose careers are in the law enforcement field in Bend, Oregon. They look up to Shane as he serves Central Oregon as Deschutes County Sherriff. With a career goal of public service as a firefighter/EMT, Tyler was humbled to have Sherriff Nelson welcome him the way he did: "Shane is a very honorable, driven and hardworking man. I greatly admire and look up to the hard work and dedication he has put in serving and protecting the community." Tyler sees role models as a valuable part of being a Lambda Chi. "Having a role model that you can look up to helps lead you to do the right thing. I am hopeful that I can keep this tradition going." Alpha Lambda was founded by a group of young men predominately from eastern Oregon and recruiting new members from communities throughout Oregon has been crucial to the chapter's success for more than a century now. Over the decades, Central Oregon has been exceptionally well represented in the chapter's membership and that tradition continues today. As in the past, Alpha Lambda has a diversity of representation from throughout Oregon, the West Coast states and beyond--with members from a dozen states, as well as five countries. This intentional focus helps ensure that ΛΧΑ remains the most diverse fraternity on campus, maintaining our leadership role at Oregon State. Tyler and Matthew Jacobsen '19-2019 excelled in their roles as co-High Deltas, with the recruitment of 39 new associate members in fall 2020. This is an incredible accomplishment during a global pandemic requiring recruitment to be done virtually! Tyler expressed his appreciation for everything that alumni do to support the chapter. He welcomes alumni to assist with the chapter's recruitment efforts. He asks that alumni send him recruitment referrals at tylerm351@gmail.com. This process is fast, and simple, and does not require an attorney to accomplish. With this simple method there is no need to revise your will or other existing estate planning documents. Of course, you may also create your legacy through your will or trust if that is a better fit for your situation.
