As the nation takes pause to honor all men and women who have ever put on a uniform to serve our country, TV does the same. On Wednesday, Nov. 11, Turner Classic Movies hosts a marathon of films commemorating the service of those in the U.S. Armed Forces. Here's a look at some of the day's offerings: "Sergeant York" (1941): Gary Cooper's minimalist acting style is just right for the true story of Alvin C. York, a backwoodsman drawn into World War I combat despite his pacifist stance. York's shooting skills paid off for the United States as he took on German troops – and Cooper's work also paid off, since he earned an Oscar for his performance. Howard Hawks directed this classic, which co-stars Walter Brennan, Joan Leslie, Ward Bond and a young June Lockhart. "The Best Years of Our Lives" (1946): This film from director William Wyler won seven Academy Awards, including best picture, as it depicts the true-to-life struggle of veterans trying to cope with being back home. Dana Andrews, Fredric March and Harold Russell provide flawless performances. Myrna Loy and Teresa Wright co-star. TCM honors Veterans Day BY STAFF WRITERS "A Teacher" Based on Hannah Fidell's 2013 feature film of the same name, this limited FX on Hulu series (that's also created by Fidell) examines the complexities and consequences of an illegal relationship that develops between a young female teacher (Kate Mara, "House of Cards") and her male student (Nick Robinson," Jurassic World"). Ashley Zukerman, Shane Harper and Dylan Schmid also star. (ORIGINAL) "Chasing the Crown: Dreamers to Streamers" Gamers will want to take a look at this unscripted series that follows three Twitch gaming streamers as they compete for prizes, build their followings and earn a coveted spot in the Crown Cup Tournament, coached by expert streamers who serve as their guides. (ORIGINAL) "Dash & Lily" This romantic comedy series stars Austin Abrams ("Chemical Hearts") and Midori Francis ("Ocean's 8") as the title characters, polar opposite young adults who trade dares, dreams and desires in a notebook they pass back and forth at locations all across New York City and discover they have more in common than they thought. (ORIGINAL) "Slugfest" (Nov. 9, Quibi) From executive producers Anthony and Joe Russo ("Avengers: Endgame," "Captain America: The Winter Soldier") comes this documentary series that delves into the heated rivalry between Marvel and DC Comics, whose stories have become the primary source material for television and movie productions.
