2 Pi Beta P hi for life. The evidence speaks for itself," she stated. "Our alumnae leadership structure is brilliant, involving both Minnesota Alpha alumnae and those from chapters across the country in our CHC board and Alumnae Advisory Committee (AAC). Our collegians have representation on CHC, through AAC and also benefit from the involvement of area alumnae club members in the life of the chapter." Mary truly believes that the commitment to Pi Beta Phi sisterhood is for life. As an alumna, she feels it's a responsibility and a great honor to help perpetuate the legacy she and many women before her put in place and can rightly be proud of and embrace what they've achieved. "We've managed to have a significant positive impact on the lives of young women, and I want future generations to have those opportunities," she said. "I'm protecting my investment not only in money but in time and love, and it goes without saying that my Pi Phi sisters are among my very closest friends. They're always there — food for the soul in good times, life-sustaining in times of sorrow and pain." Additionally, Pi Phi's leadership development programs have observable and positive impacts. While serving on CHC, Mary worked closely with many collegians and has watched them move on, building on their success as chapter leaders to achieve success in their personal and professional lives while also giving back to their communities. Those women have become leaders on Minnesota Alpha's CHC, AAC and in this capital campaign. Along the way they've become treasured "sister friends" of Mary's and women of whom she is very proud. "It's been wonderful to watch them grow and observe who they have become. It warms my heart," she shared. "They were so tolerant of my efforts to broaden their understanding of CHC and, in retrospect, I saw myself as a mentor to some of those women. I'm so proud of what they've achieved and how they've carried on a legacy my generation helped establish." Mary feels passionate about collaboration and recognizes it's the only way for Minnesota Alpha to progress and for the dream of the capital campaign become a reality. "The success of this capital campaign is essential to ensuring our chapter's continued vitality — to providing the values- centered leadership so important to our communities. We all have reason to be proud of that legacy," she said. "I hope Minnesota Alpha alumnae will join me in contributing to the campaign, remembering that all gifts will be appreciated and make a difference." While this has been an unusual year to say the least, Mary understands how Minnesota Alpha's sisters may be struggling in terms of the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty surrounding it. As a child, there was a polio outbreak in her hometown of Billings, Montana, as well as a measles outbreak at her school. Mary remembers a summer confined to her backyard during the polio outbreak at age 4 and being incredibly sick with the measles during Thanksgiving at age 7. "I know how frightened everyone was in the absence of a vaccine," she stated. "We didn't need anyone ginning it up or ginning it down — we got it. We were frightened, and that's where we are now." After graduating from The U, Mary worked in leadership and fundraising, serving in development positions at three universities before being recruited to join Bentz Whaley Flessner in the Twin Cities. In her career, she provided campaign fundraising counsel exclusively for nonprofits. In her retirement, she enjoys spending time with friends and family, including her daughter-in-law, Cynthia DeSimone North '88. She and her husband, Peter, live in Stillwater, Minnesota.
