Now, John is semi-retired and able to focus on what he is most proud of—his family. John and his husband, Jack, met in Chicago, and they were on the forefront of starting a family via surrogacy in the U.S. Today, they are grateful for their four children: Emma, twins Ethan and Brendan, and Jason. Emma is a sophomore at Boston College, Ethan and Brendan are seniors in high school beginning their college search, and Jason is a sophomore in high school. "Ethan and Brendan visited Iowa State for the Kansas basketball game. One twin was cheering on Iowa State and one was cheering for Kansas," he said with a laugh. "I even brought them to the fraternity house—it was a fun trip." In addition to his family, John has made philanthropy and giving back a priority in his life, including supporting Gamma Upsilon Chapter's most recent capital campaign. "We decided to support the campaign during the matching gift challenge, and we were able to make a match and create a scholarship fund," he stated. "That's one thing Gary Flander '78 had said was a way for us to give back and acknowledge all the good stuff going on at ATΩ at Iowa State, as a thank-you." Despite the years that have passed since John lived with his ATΩ brothers in Ames, the bonds they formed are lifelong. While in the area for a high school reunion a few years ago, John was able to visit Gamma Upsilon for a reunion that just happened to fall on the same weekend. "It's amazing—like any old friends, once you reconnect, it's as if it was just yesterday you were hanging out together in college," he said. "The feelings come back quickly once you get the chance to reconnect with people over the years. It brings a lot of great memories back, and it's great to hear how people have done and what they've done." John and Jack, who is an attorney and founder of Birch Lake Partners, reside in Chicago.
