IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY PAGE 3 Thank You to the Brothers Who Have Donated Since the Spring 2020 Appeal! T he last few months have been some of the most challenging and interesting times in recent memory for millions of people worldwide, including the undergraduate brothers at Gamma Upsilon. Although the active chapter has been forced to adapt in many ways, I'm proud to say that our brotherhood is still thriving. We activated 12 new members this fall and saw back-to-back semesters with new records for all-chapter GPA. Our spring GPA of 3.58 ranked Gamma Upsilon in the top 10 of Iowa State fraternities. Gamma Upsilon hosted our inaugural Cones and Bones philanthropy event last spring, which raised $1,300 the Animal Rescue League. Members served guests snow cones and ice cream cones. Guests also enjoyed spending time with numerous rescue dogs. "Our members did a great job of making this event possible and turning Cones and Bones into a massive success," Philanthropy Chairman Ben Kreamer '19 said. We're excited to expand on our recent academic and philanthropic success with the help of an exceptional new member class. The new member education program is sure to groom these 37 young men into leaders within our chapter. "We can't wait to see what this new group of men can do for this chapter, and we look forward to guiding them through their journey," Recruitment Chairman Mark Rapp '19 said. Throughout 2020, Gamma Upsilon has become very involved with Best Buddies, an organization where college students get to spend quality time and create connections with adults who have learning and mental disabilities. Best Buddies has provided us with a great opportunity that all brothers are grateful for and we look forward to building great relationships through this program. Over the last two semesters, Mark Rapp, Ben Baca '18, and Caden Flodstrom '18 have participated in the Ivy College of Business Student Council. This organization is dedicated to making new students feel more comfortable at Iowa State and within the Ivy College of Business community, among other things. More members are broadening their interests and joining new clubs, hoping to create relationships for their future career fields. Unfortunately, we haven't hosted any alumni or parent events this fall due to COVID-19 restrictions, but our Mom's Weekend was a huge success in the spring, raising $5,000 for ACCESS Assault Care Center in Ames. Along with supporting our local philanthropic organization, brothers strengthen relationships with their mothers and get to know each other's families. Despite our time together being cut short in the spring, we had a blast playing intramural basketball. Brothers enjoyed staying active and were well represented on the hardwood with three teams. "Intramurals is a great way to get to know the competitive side of the members and it's also a great time," Intramural Chairman Jackson Tucker '19 said. While these last few months haven't been easy, we've made the most of these unprecedented times and learned a lot about ourselves. I'm proud of our members for overcoming barriers and honing their leadership skills. The remainder of the fall semester figures to feature more opportunities for us to grow. We're committed to living up to the high standard that has been set by the loyal alumni who came before us. Thank you for all your support! Alumni Update CHAPTER ETERNAL We say goodbye to our brothers who entered Chapter Eternal this year. We thank them for all they brought to our brother- hood. They will be missed. William R. Without his financial and logistical contributions, Gamma Upsilon would not be the model fraternity that it is today. Congratulations and thank you, Bill, for your dedication to our brotherhood. Gary Flander '78 became a member of the ATĪ© Foundation Board of Governors on August 22. On the same date, Bill Gardiner '52 retired from the Board of Governors after 24 years of service.
