alpha chi omega | page 4 THERE IS MORE TO COLLEGE, AND TO LIFE, THAN BOOK LEARNING Through Alpha Chi, Deirdre made friendships that have survived the many seasons of their lives. "Cynthia Heisler Doerhoff '73 and Cindy Scherr '73, who were my roommates in a three-girl room my first semester in the Alpha Chi house, remain my best friends to this day," she shared. "I've been around for their kids' births, adult lives and marriages. I love them and their families, and their families are my family." For Deirdre, being a member of Alpha Nu Chapter not only provided her with friends for life, but it also helped her realize she had the potential to be anything she wanted to be in life. "The best thing that ever happened to me was becoming an Alpha Chi." You can connect with Deirdre at dkhirner@gmail.com. Wisdom, Devotion and Achievement (Continued from page 3) M ary Carter Duncan Martin '92 came to Mizzou knowing she wanted to join a sorority, and although her older sister, Jennifer Duncan Gresham '90, was a senior in Alpha Chi Omega, she went into recruitment with an open mind. Even so, when she walked into the Alpha Nu chapter house, she knew she was home. "I walked in the front door of 900 Richmond to an incredibly warm welcome from some of the most amazing women I'd ever met," Mary Carter said. "There was no doubt Alpha Chi was the right choice for me!" Like many sisters, Mary Carter thoroughly enjoyed the time they spent together through various events: chapter meetings, dinners, formals, socials, pomping, philanthropy, living together in the house and so much more. "Whatever it was, we did it all together." This taught Mary Carter the importance of forming connections with other women as they navigate the world. "As any of us went through hard times, there was always someone to walk alongside the tough parts of the journey with us. That was an incredible life lesson: we are stronger when we support each other." Mary Carter is thankful to have maintained deep friendships with her sisters through the years, and has enjoyed staying involved with the sorority as an alumna. While in law school, she worked as a chapter consultant for the Beta Sigma Chapter at the University of Georgia. She was also active in alumnae groups in St. Louis and Arkansas, and was honored to serve on the capital campaign committee to support much- needed renovations to the Alpha Nu house. "Throughout my career, I've made connections with more sisters than I can count," Mary Carter said. "Some of my favorite coworkers have turned out to be Alpha Chis!" She is also a regular season ticket holder for Mizzou football and loves running into sisters when she visits Columbia. Mary Carter lives in Bentonville, Arkansas, with her husband and two sons. Like most of us this year, she enjoys various pastimes at home and loves exploring the outdoors. In addition to her career leading the team of employment lawyers supporting Walmart International and Global Labor, and supporting her sons' activities, she serves in local chapters of multiple advocacy groups, such as Youth in Need, Northwest Arkansas Children's Advocacy Center and the Young Men's Service League. "Alpha Chi's focus on addressing domestic violence stuck with me!" You can connect with Mary Carter at marycartermartin@gmail.com.
