H
arvard University will no longer sanction students who join single-sex clubs like Greek
organizations after it seemed like the university would lose a sexual discrimination lawsuit
against fraternity and sororities, according to news reports. The university lifted the ban in
June 2020 that would have prevented students involved in exclusively all-male or all-female
final clubs or Greek organizations from receiving fellowships or other leadership positions
on campus. Harvard administration considered such clubs discriminatory because they could
exclude students based on gender.
Harvard initially imposed penalties on students who joined single-sex social organizations in
2016, barring them from holding leadership positions in other student groups and athletic teams,
while also denying them college-administered fellowships. The policy came on the heels of an
internal report finding links to sexual assault among all-male clubs, resolving to do away with
them entirely and maintaining that all single-gender groups are discriminatory.
In December 2017, Harvard modified the rule to allow female students to remain in single-
sex groups for a "grace period" of five years, but nonetheless reaffirmed the ban on all-male
organizations. Though the school urged the female groups to move toward more inclusion, the
policy change created a clear gender-based distinction.
Dani Weatherford, CEO of the National Panhellenic Conference, and Judson Horras, CEO of the
North American Interfraternity Conference, released the following joint statement on Harvard's
decision to drop its sanctions policy: "While we believe the discriminatory nature of Harvard's
policy was apparent long ago, we are nonetheless gratified to see that Harvard will no longer
seek to enforce such an unlawful policy."

P
lanning for Alpha Nu's Centennial in 2022
has started, but it's not too late to share your
suggestions. What would you like the weekend
to include? House tour, campus tour, gala,
winery visit, philanthropy project, leadership
sessions, opportunity to gather and just chat?
Because the Southeastern Conference does not
announce game times until two weeks prior, it is
nearly impossible to make centennial plans on a
football weekend in the fall. Thus, the tentative
date is the weekend of April 22-24, 2022, with
another event occurring during Homecoming in
October 2022.
